Ned's Enemies

Victorian Police

This list was originally attached to the story Police Anger Over Ned Kelly Logo Proposal in our Soap Box section but the links got so long it was time to give it a section on its own! It's not that we want to be seen as police knockers, because if it wasn't for all the decent cops out there we'd be living in a hell hole similar to Iraq. But when the Victorian Chief Police Commissioner, Christine Nixon bangs on about how evil Ned Kelly was, it's hard to take her seriously. Especially when we keep reading stories like the examples below.

'...It was a shame we Australians celebrate a bushranger ... Ned murdered people and may have murdered many more...'
Victorian Chief Police Commissioner Christine Nixon, June 27, 2002

Ironically that statement came from the same woman who had the 'brains' to install an incredibly shady fellow as head of a major crime taskforce:

'In a major embarrassment to Victoria Police and Ms Nixon, a report by the OPI says she agreed to the creation of a crime taskforce at the behest of a man who was later convicted of illegally accessing police data ... But the OPI found that the man who convinced Ms Nixon to set up Operation Clarendon, Kerry Milte, was acting to further his own interests and those of two senior police officers hand-picked to work with him. Months after Operation Clarendon was launched, Ms Nixon was forced to disband it when she received corruption allegations against one of those running it, former detective Wayne Strawhorn, who is now in jail...'
from Nixon duped by corrupt ex-officer, says OPI

All we want is for the Victorian Police to hand over their "war trophy", namely Steve Hart's armour to either the Victorian Museum or State Library. However, as it's the only item of worth in their pitiful Police Museum, I strongly doubt it. This is the same museum which fails to mention the innocent victims of the Glenrowan siege. It was, afterall, police bullets which caused the death of plate layer Martin Cherry and a child named Johnny Jones. Furthermore, Jane Jones was wounded in the forehead (later to die), Michael Reardon was wounded in the shoulder, and William Metcalf was wounded in the eye. It seems some coppers are a law unto themselves:

Later, Saunders would leave the force in disgrace after a drug corruption scandal. I started researching this seemingly endless (and quite disturbing) list in May 2007 and while it's only based on the Victorian police it appears to be getting longer every week! I'm sure this page could end up eating my entire web site if I gave it a chance, but I'm loath to spend so much time on this crap. Instead if you want an extra fill of dodgy coppers check out:

Cops In Crisis The Herald Sun

STEVE HARTSteve Hart descendant Paul O'Keefe has alerted me to yet another ridiculous Kelly Gang claim (the latest in a line of many). Not just content to see Dan escape, this time around Steve also made a bolt from the Glenrowan Inn fire (so why was Ned heading back when they had both left?). Lucky Steve also headed north where he lived a long and happy life in Queensland under the name of Billy Meade. Apparently this Meade character confessed about his double identity on his deathbed in 1938. Well, in that case, it
[dna could solve kelly mystery]

This re-release includes an extra 30 minutes of special features beautifully presented in a new and exciting cover design. The viewer now has the privilege of accompanying Ian Jones, an eminent Kelly historian and author, as he revisits such sites as the Kelly and Police caves, Glenrowan, Stringybark Creek and Joe Byrne and Aaron Sherritt's secret hide out in Byrnes Gully. The main feature is also an exciting journey through the events of Ned Kelly’s life and the country that shaped it, told through rare photographs and press drawings. Showcasing many beautiful locations of North Eastern Victoria, the DVD provides an accurate guide for the traveller interested in visiting the places where these remarkable events occurred.
