NED IN THE NEWS
Ned's Secret Love
The Ned Kelly Project
Real Villains

And then a wail of agony cut through the darkness. It was young Johnny Jones. A police bullet had smashed through the wall and into frail Johnny, just above his hip. Mortally wounded, he screamed for help. 'Oh, mother! I am shot!'
Paul Terry The True Story of Ned Kelly's Last Stand

Victorian Police

This list was originally attached to the story Police Anger Over Ned Kelly Logo Proposal in our Soap Box section but the links got so long it was time to give it a section on its own! It's not that we want to be seen as police knockers, because if it wasn't for all the decent cops out there we'd be living in a hell hole similar to Iraq. But when the ex-Victorian Chief Police Commissioner, Christine Nixon banged on about how evil Ned Kelly was, it was hard to take her seriously. Especially when we keep reading stories, some of them quite perturbing, like the examples below.

'...It was a shame we Australians celebrate a bushranger ... Ned murdered people and may have murdered many more...'
Victorian Chief Police Commissioner Christine Nixon, June 27, 2002

This is the same genius who decided she needed a decent feed so on the night of Australia's worst natural disaster. After being told many lives had been lost in the Black Saturday bushfires, Victoria's then Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon left the command centre at 6pm, turned off her mobile phone and went out for a lovely pub meal. This woman is no Anna Bligh:

Starving Nixon'...''I had to eat, it's as simple as that,'' she said...

...Police Association secretary Greg Davies said it was a disgrace that the former police chief had dined out while country Victorians were fighting for their lives. ''Victorians who have lost family members, relatives, friends, properties and had their lives altered permanently have every right to be completely disgusted if the person running the show went to dinner five minutes after being told of the expected loss of life,'' he said...'
from Nixon was wrong to go: Brumby

Then when she retired we 'lucky' Victorians got this knuckle-head Simon Overland, who appears to have spent his formative years eking out an existence as a Sam the Eagle Muppet impersonator right down to a brain full of stuffing:

Sam/Simon the Eagle'...Victoria’s top police officer has been caught carrying bullets on a domestic flight - an offence that carries a maximum seven-year jail term. A union official has called for Chief Commissioner Simon Overland to be immediately suspended after he admitted carrying a magazine containing three live rounds of ammunition on a Qantas flight from Melbourne to Canberra yesterday. It was not until the police chief attempted to board a Qantas flight back to Melbourne that Australian Federal Police officers discovered the security breach...'
from Overland 'bullets' offence carries seven-year jail term

No surprise he went the way of the dodo bird as well... Now we have good old cross-dresser Ken Lay who seems to have trouble remembering his own department's rule about speeding. His poor memory even extends to informing his superiors about the severity of the fine (see: Traffic chief's speeding confession came too late). Is he another,  'Do as I say, not as I do' Inspector Plod? Time will tell.

All we want is for the Victorian Police to hand over their 'war trophies', namely Dan Kelly and Steve Hart's armour to more deserving institutions such as the Victorian Museum or State Library of Victoria. However, as it's the only items of worth in their pitiful police museum, I strongly doubt it. This is the same museum which fails to mention the innocent victims of the Glenrowan siege.

It was, after all, police bullets which caused the death of plate layer Martin Cherry and the child Johnny Jones. Furthermore police were responsible for wounding his sister Jane Jones in the forehead (later to die), Michael Reardon in the shoulder, and William Metcalf in the eye. No wonder it seems some coppers are a law unto themselves:

Similar concerns were raised in November 2005 by the director of the Office of Police Integrity, George Brouwer, in a report on fatal police shootings. Dale was one of three men charged for allegedly attempting to steal $1.3 million in drugs. Hodson and drug squad senior detective David Miechel had been caught red-handed at the scene after breaking into an East Oakleigh drug house. Hodson later made a statement that Dale was the mastermind behind the theft. Dale, the prosecution would have alleged, responded by leaking a police report showing Hodson was an informer in the hope that either someone in the underworld would kill him or that it would broaden the suspect list if or when he was killed. The drug case against Dale collapsed when Hodson was shot dead with his wife in his Kew home. From that day the detective was seen as the main suspect for organising the hit...'

Seven hundred drivers could escape punishment despite being stopped by officers and breathalysed, and seen to be over the limit. Worse still, all the drivers could be freely driving on our roads today. The loophole has been exposed by Melbourne barrister Warwick Walsh-Buckley whose client, Peter Kypri, was sent a charge sheet that was missing vital information. Mr Walsh-Buckley argued the "charge is so badly worded" that it "disclosed no offence known to law". Magistrate Max Cashmore heard the case at Ringwood Magistrates' Court and agreed, dismissing the charge against Mr Kypri...'

'...A major drug case has collapsed after two senior Victorian policemen - described by a judge as ''absolute dimwits'' - failed to take 20 seconds of their time to legally swear an affidavit or affirm it. Many fear the decision yesterday by the Director of Public Prosecutions to ''discontinue'' charges against three defendants facing trial may not be his last...'

I started researching this seemingly endless (and quite disturbing) list in May 2007 and while it's only based on the Victorian police it appears to be getting longer every year! I'm sure this page could end up eating my entire web site if I gave it a chance, but I'm loath to spend so much time on this crap. So maybe Lay should just admit defeat and hand Dan Kelly and Steve Hart's armour over to a more deserving custodian.

TEACHING HISTORY
While not everyone wants to read about Ned Kelly or the ANZACs or even The Great Depression, we hope they want to learn something about Australian History. From the ex-Prime Minister John Howard to a confused ex-NSW Education Minister Carmel Tebbutt (see the 'ex' pattern here?) a number of politicians have jumped on the teaching history bandwagon. But at what cost? From right wingers to a multitude of meddling State Governments, it seems everyone has an agenda. We'd like to let the readers decide what is worth learning. Here at IronOutlaw.com we present the facts, the fiction and everything in between. It all adds to the experience and hopefully makes history an exciting place to be while also proving it doesn't always have to be written by the victors.
