Beechworth

Half an hour north east of Glenrowan you will discover Beechworth, a town steeped in Kelly Gang history. Beechworth is a town of attractive granite buildings, wide tree-lined streets and many beautiful buildings on the National Trust register. Until gold was found in 1852 Beechworth was a grazing town, then people arrived in droves hoping to strike it rich. Town administrators knew the gold would not last forever and had the foresight to build a gaol, asylum, general hospital and a hospice for the aged. These maintained the economic strength of Beechworth. Today Beechworth has a wide range of accommodation from caravan parks and motels to cottages and classy guest houses. Beechworth also boast fine nature walks amongst its forests and trees with many would be adventurers able to fossick for precious stones or gold dust. The more seasoned traveller may chose the less strenuous option of exploring Beechworth numerous vineyards for a tasting treat and good conversation with the wine makers. Food wise, Beechworth offers a range of great experiences and options — you can enjoy a picnic in the gardens or by the lake, visit a café or hotel or indulge in an award-winning restaurant.

Beechworth Gallery
Built in 1857, the three-storey Beechworth Gallery is a treasure trove of jewellery, sculptures, home furnishings, paintings and glassware. It was built as a wine and spirit merchant's warehouse and its solid granite foundations and red gum timbers are period features. The 1926 Dodge parked at the front of the gallery was owned by Truman Hargan, who invented the Hargan swing saw. Inside you can see works by Norman and Lionel Lindsay, Pro Hart, and some interesting ceramic indoor fountains and wine barrels.

Glenrowan

Along the Hume Highway, 45 kilometres from Benalla, is the site of the Kelly Gang’s last stand, Glenrowan. Here, at the corner of Beaconsfield Parade and Siege Street, you’ll find the vacant block where Ann Jones inn once stood. Glenrowan retains none of the buildings which Ned Kelly would have known in his lifetime. However, the community have recently constructed a replica of the original railway station around the old railway platform. There is also a replica of the Kelly homestead behind Kate's Cottage and a range of artifacts in the town's various “museums” or to be more precise, gift shops. Plaques around town denote where some of the events surrounding the siege transpired. While the siege site has little to offer the busy traveller, Kelly enthusiasts with active imaginations should find the area very interesting.

Attractions

Lake Mokoan is a large expanse of water to the west and north-west of town which is ideal for boating, fishing and water skiing.

There is a campground and the two kilometre Pine Gully Nature Walk holds out the possibility of spotting kangaroos, koalas and some beautiful parrots. While news reports abound with stories of Ned Kelly's missing bones not a word is mentioned about his stolen skull? Back in December 1978, Kelly's cranium was lifted from the Old Melbourne Gaol in what appeared to be a university student prank. One of the culprits was rumoured to be an ex-prime minister's son, yet to this day no one knows what happened to it. While a dirt farmer in Western Australia claims he has the skull buried in a tin can in his backyard, evidence has consistently disproved his claim. For while he allegedly carries one of the skull's teeth on a necklace, it is in fact Ernest Knox's skull (hence the EK engraved on the skull). This EK was executed in 1894 for murder, after the shooting death of a jeweller's son during a bungled armed robbery. Either way, they are human remains and the befuddled Western Australian police should have confiscated this skull when they first heard his claim.

This re-release includes an extra 30 minutes of special features beautifully presented in a new and exciting cover design. The viewer now has the privilege of accompanying Ian Jones, an eminent Kelly historian and author, as he revisits such sites as the Kelly and Police caves, Glenrowan, Stringybark Creek and Joe Byrne and Aaron Sherritt's secret hide out in Byrnes Gully. The main feature is also an exciting journey through the events of Ned Kelly’s life and the country that shaped it, told through rare photographs and press drawings. Showcasing many beautiful locations of North Eastern Victoria, the DVD provides an accurate guide for the traveller interested in visiting the places where these remarkable events occurred.
