of the film, alongside soundtracks and a variety of
viewing modes.

the Kelly Gang (1906), Digitally restored
remaining fragments of the film
• Reconstructed study version of the film, providing
background and curated context to the restored fragments

and NFSA's Senior Curator of Moving Image, Graham Shirley

Silent Film Festival

Ned
Kelly 2003
You can kill a man but not a
legend
From EzyDVD, "Ned
Kelly (Ledger) and his brother Dan, sons of an Irish
pig thief exiled to the Australian penal colony in
1843, formed the core of the Kelly Gang (with two
other men), an outlaw gang (they were called "bushrangers",
not "cowboys") that roamed across Australia
for over two wild years. Kelly was a clever bandit,
making his own homemade armor, including steel chest
plates and helmets, to stop bullets from stopping him.
Kelly was first arrested at 16 for horse stealing,
but he became an outlaw when he killed a police officer
who was harrassing his brother."
When the offical
spiel (see above) can't even get the facts right you
know this is going to be a killer of a movie! The DVD
edition of Gregor Jordan’s Ned
Kelly hasn't
improved greatly over the theatrical version. The
end shoot out is still a shocker with hundreds of
troopers squaring of against 8 six shooter’s
from Ned, Joe, Dan and Steve who manage to blow away
at least 20 police! And where were the deleted scenes,
especially the one with Peter Phelps? The 20 minute
documentary narrated by Charles “Bud” Tingwell
definitely make this purchase less offensive.

Features:
• Ned Kelly Documentary A look at the history of Ned Kelly and his
influence on Australian culture

Ned
From Nick Jardine
from Michael D Review, “This
effort is really Abe Forsythe finding his feet in
the world of feature film-making, but if Ned is anything
to go by, Australian toilet humour has a bright future.
The only real downside to Ned is the number of extended
flat spots. There are many jokes that just don't
fire, and while those who enjoy the more deranged
side of life will probably accept these, the majority
will find them simply not funny.”

Ned Kelly 1970
If
you can get over the fact that the lead actor was
horribly miscast then you should enjoy this now classic
tale. The bush scenes are grandiose, the soundtrack
very “western”, and the storyline a lot
closer to the facts than Jordan’s version.
Like it or not, casting Mick Jagger threw this movie
into the world spot light, opening up millions of
new viewers to the legend of the Kelly Gang.
