Ned’s Lovers
From: Aidan Phelan [angelathornton@optusnet.com.au] 29 Dec 03

As I mentioned here earlier this year I am devising a script about Ned Kelly. I would like to run past you guys my choice for Ned's lover. I have looked at the information on the subject at Bailup.com and decided on using Ettie Hart as the love interest and it will be shown as a doomed romance that begun not long after Ned's boxing match when he goes to the races and Dan brings along Steve and Ettie (who at first is indifferent towards Ned but is quickly charmed by him). Ned is the one who wants to break off the relationship after Stringybark but she persits in helping him. She becomes more distant when Ned devises the idea of the republic and she realises that he is going to attempt treason etc. Well, I'd love to hear what you think?
P.S. I here from a reliable source that there is another Kelly film currently being made due for release late next year. Do you guys have any info? It would be something that I'm sure many Kellites would love to know about. I know the Ledger film is due for US release in early 2004

Besieged Screening on Channel 9
From: Paul O'Keefe [okeefe@smartchat.net.au] 04 Dec 03
I cannot believe channel 9's decision to screen Besieged when it did, on Sunday 2pm last weekend. To make matters worse it was on whilst the Davis Cup final was being played out. So I dont really think it would of rated very highly to say the least. To say I'm dissapointed in the programming Department at 9 is an understatement. I thought the final cut of Besieged was great. Prior to its airing on 9 I saw it in its early stages at Glenrowan, and then seeing it finished at its Sydney Premiere a few weeks ago alot of work had been done to get it just right. But guess what channel 9 did? Not only did they stuff up when it was shown, but also they cut nearly 15 minutes off it to fit in the ads!! I think a few targeted emails/calls to the programing department at 9 might do the trick. To show again one of the most balanced documentary ever produced on the Kelly Gang. Still the one...

Goodbye and thanks
From: Brendan Pearse [brendan@nostalgia.com.au] 04 Dec 03
Hi Brad , I am writing to say thanks and goodbye. I am bowing out of the Ned Kelly project and I wish to say thanks for your support and the support of some of your readers. Matt will be continuing the exhibition with some new people. The exhibition will be reopening very soon. The last few years have been very hard on me and my very young family (a son 2 and a daughter 9 months) trying to find new Kelly relics and keep coming up with fresh ideas, etc. Our last backers left a lot to be desired so I have finally thrown up the white flag. I wish you continued success with your web site and I sincerely hope that Ned lives on and on for many years to come. Kindest regards, Brendan Pearse

Mary Kirk
From: Phil [philipmaguire@australia.edu] 02 Dec 03
Brad, how you going? I noticed on Iron Outlaw a statement about the outbreak in the north-east ending with the marriage of Mary Kirk to the policeman, Robert Graham. I was just wondering if you knew whether Mary Kirk had any connection to the Kelly's - friend, relative maybe? I ask because my great Grandmother, Catherine Maguire (nee Kirk) from Dargo had a sister Mary and some brothers who moved across into the north-east. There are still Kirk's around Myrtleford and a number of Irish families all interconnected in the Dargo, Omeo, Bogong region including the McNamara's, Grays, Kirks, Culhane's and so on. What interests me is the story of Ned hiding out on the Bogongs after the raid on Jerilderie. There's a bit of a legend that he was on my alpine grazing property in the Bundarrah Valley but I've always treated it as a myth. A very old Lady from Corryong, Mary Peirce, was reported in the papers a few years back claiming that Ned called at her home and spoke to her mother when she (the mother) was a girl. The papers reported the incident as happening at Corryong but I spoke to Mary Peirce personally and she told me it happened in the Bundarrah Valley in a spot known as the Higgins paddock. At that time the property was owned by the Callaghan family. The long and short of it is that if Mary Kirk's family was involved with the Kelly's, there is every chance that the Bogong hideout story is true. If it was I could go on to speculate that Ned and maybe George King were stealing horses in the north-east and running them over the tops into Gippsland for sale... maybe Ned was behind the legend of the elusive Bogong Jack. That's probably a bit rich, but an interesting thought, nevertheless. By the way, the mountain at the eastern end of the Bundarrah Valley is called Mt Ned. If you know anything about the Kirk's I'd appreciate it if you could let me know.

History Extension
From: Ben Horne [lightingsistems@hotmail.com] 01 Dec 03
Hi, my name is Ben Horne and I am a year 11 student about to start my HSC year. I am studying the history extension course, and I have chosen to do my major work on the topic of Ned Kelly. Hero or villain. I think your site is fantastic I have been looking at it all afternoon, however I am struggling to locate much evidence that ned was just a straight out criminal. I have got some information on Edgar Penzig, but I was wondering if there was any further information or historians names you could send me. Thank you very much. Forget Max Brown and Ian Jones — Edgar Penzig... now there’s a real historian...

Hi, i am wondering if you have a video of Besieged the Ned Kelly Story to buy  my mother seen it on channel 9 yesterday and loved the story. Apparently it was on Channel Nine at 2pm Sunday — the same time that Channel Seven was showing the Davis Cup Final. There’s a good programming decision...

Thankyou

My Opinion
From: Craig [shuter96@hotmail.com] 28 Nov 03
I think the kelly gang are all victims of the corrupt system of victoria. it is bullsh*t the way they were treated and if i were in their shoes i would have done the same as they. now i have a tattoo of ned kelly on my shoulder and people ask me why would you get that for and what does it mean?.. well it means to me strength and honour.. and above all that f*ck all authority.. but why ned? why not joe byrne steve hart or dan kelly? well they are all great people to me but the fact that ned could of escaped from glenrowan but dint he came back to try to save his mates and family thats why.. now a lot of people havent even heard of the others is only ned that anyone has heard of .. that really annoys me cos the lot of them should be acknowledged. No comment...

Let me know what you think, I had scanned some of your websites to get some main ideas, its explained better in the link above. Click on GALLERY and right below is the photo. The photo was for a portrait competition but unfortunately the judges didn’t even pick it to be in the selected entries to be displayed! Not that I’m complaining, I rather you all take a look at it and thanks for all the information on your website and the props :)

Ironoutlaw.com
From: Barry El-Tahche [barry.el-tahche@db.com] 18 Nov 03

Hi Brad. I'd like to say what a great website on Ned Kelly you have created and maintained. It is quite hard to find a site that literally has it all. I have spent the past day and a half going through the website and still find there is so much more. I must say the time and effort spent on your behalf has made it easier for me to read about and understand even more about the Kelly's. I have only recently become accustomed to Ned, his gang and his family. I was staying down in Milawa with my wife for three days. After visiting the wineries and the local produce, we went for a drive to Glenrowan. From that moment, I was just captured by Kelly history. We visited the number of galleries, souvenir shops, visited the sites of the siege and yes, watched the animated theatre. This all just wet the appetite. We had spent close to the whole day there! We moved on to Tasmania after that - but thought of stopping at Benalla to view the sash. We decided instead to stop on the way back. And what an unfortunate decision that was !! We visited Benalla on the way back and the lady said they have taken it away to get restored and won't be back till December! It is going to cost about $10,000 - but we missed it! If we had gone to Benalla on the way down, we would of seen it!! Anyway, as I do want to further learn and understand more on Ned, I wanted to ask what your opinion was on what good Non-Fictional material, ie books, videos, dvds you would suggest on purchasing (yes - I have seen Ned Kelly with Heath Ledger which I have to give about 7/10 - the additional features on the DVD were great). Even other sites to visit anywhere in the country - am more than happy to travel!! Thanks for taking the time to read my email and again, your website is undoubtedly the best for all Ned Kelly information. Best Regards. Check out our Tourism section for places to see in Kelly Country

A Ned Script
From: Aidan Phelan [angelathornton@optusnet.com.au] 14 Nov 03
I am currently working on a screenplay on the life of Ned Kelly. Ned's life inspired me into working in film as a career, now I am intent on writing a screenplay. I would like some help on how to start the film, (which is fact based!) and be able to keep the film's main focus, the outlawry of the gang, within two hours at least. Any help would be crash hot! Fact based! Now’s theres a first!
P.S. Did anyone else note the giant robotic flamethrower characters in the film The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? Yes! They looked very similar to a certain 19th century gang of outlaws...

Red, red wine

Hello. I recently saw on the news about a release of red wine bearing the label Ned Red. I wonder if you were aware of it and where it could be purchased? Made by Ferguson’s Wines in the Yarra Valley it is a blend of reds from the region. Although, going by most reports, it should have come out in a cask...

re: Quirk of fate
From: Jo [josedley@yahoo.com.au] 12 Nov 03
Sorry to be pedantic but they also didn't have eastern standard time in 1880 so 10am, 11th November 1880 is the equivalent of 11.20am in 2003. Either way, a great man died but his spirit lives on. Lest we forget

Quirk of fate
From: Ben Collins [ben@ironoutlaw.com] 11 Nov 03
It's the 11th of the 11th today. But what most people don't realise is that while they're bowing their heads for a minute's silence for the fallen soldiers, it was also the moment 123 years ago that Ned was hanged. “But Ned was executed at 10am,” I hear you say. That's correct but of course they didn't have daylight saving in Nov 1880, so 10am back then is actually 11am today. But they didn't have daylight savings in 1918 either...

Such Is Life
From: Philip Maguire [philipmaguire@australia.edu] 09 Nov 03

G'day. Just wanted to congratulate you on the Iron Outlaw site. What a great resource. Ned has been a hero to me since I was a child and I've spent a lot of time researching bits and pieces of his life... while working as a journo with The Sunday Herald Sun I wrote a few peices about him. Something that might interest you is that The Age former theatre critic claims, that on a visit to the London Museum in the 1960's, he saw the Declaration of The Republic Of North East Victoria signed by Ned and others. Leonard says that when he subsequently returned to the museum to make enquiries the declaration had mysteriously disappeared. Anyway, I no longer work as a journo... I'm also a mountain Cattleman in the Omeo district and it's reputed that Ned actually stayed at my property in the Bundarrah Valley at one time. Whether true or not, it's a good story. The Bundarrah is nestled in the eastern lee of The Bogong High Plains, only a short ride across the tops back to the north-east. Being of Irish descent myself, naturally I'm interested in preserving the Kelly legend, and in particular, answering slurs against Ned's character which seem to be happening more often. I'm definitiely not impressed with the Victoria Police's ceremony at Mansfield. Recently I recorded a CD and one of the songs is called Such Is Life. It's my contribution to Kellyana I s'pose. I just tried to write a rollicking ballad in the spirit of Ned's words about riding fearless, free and bold. The lyrics follow here and if you're interested I'd be happy to send you the song. Once again, thanks for such a great site. Check out the words to Philip’s song here at Such Is Life

Just a quick letter to congratulate you on your site... My name is Patrick “Chris” Orchard and I'm from Ballarat in Victoria... My fathers uncle was a man named Thomas Byrne and he hailed from Goulborn, N.S.W... So i would have a guess that somewhere along the line he was proberly a relative of Joe Byrne... Dad said that he asked him once about the relationship and his uncle replied that they thought they may of been but it was never spoke about at home... Anyway keep up the good work...

Victoria Police Uniforms 1880
From: Greg Blake [gregoryblake@bigpond.com] 05 Nov 03
I am currently sculpting a 54mm miniature of a member of the Victoria Police ca.1880 and need some advice from anyone who might be able to help me. I am making my model with pistol drawn, but in all contempary photos of police in uniform that I have seen a chest cross strap is apparent but no pistol holster is shown. This could be that I just haven't looked hard enough, or it may mean such holsters were not part of the uniform. Does anyone know how the police carried their pistols at the time, or can someone put me onto a source of illustrations/photos that show the arrangement for holsters, if indeed they were used. Thanks in anticipation. If anyone can help contact Greg at his email address above

Could you please give me the locations if it isn’t any trouble for you.

Stringybark Commemoration
From: Dylan Webb [dylan.webb@vu.edu.au] 29 Oct 03

Recently, Commissioner Nixon lead a commemorative ceremony to the 3 Victorian Police Force members who died at Stringybark Creek. It was a fitting thing to do. Will there also be a commemorative ceremony to the civilians killed at Glenrowan? They rightly deserve to be acknowledged as they too unwilingly gave up their lives. Nixon wouldn’t be aware of any police related deaths, even if they jumped up and bit her on her overly ample backside. Just imagine erecting monuments to the hundreds of Aboriginals killed by police over the last century and a half... we’d run out of cement!

My two cents worth!
From: Adam Taylor [adamtaylor35@optusnet.com.au] 23 Oct 03

As a young boy growing up (I am now 35) I was (and still am) absorbed in the Kelly legend. It was either '81 or '82 that my mother took me and my two sisters down (from Woy Woy, N. S. W) to Glenrowan on the train. My mother had arranged a 3 day stay at the motel and the owners even picked us up at the station (Wangaratta)! They even let Mum use their two door Celica. I had watched the Last Outlaw when it was first screened and sat back in awe!! (I have since got the entire series, minus the ads, on two 4 hour video tapes, in excellent quality!) I even had fore-sight to grab a copy of the book that came with the series!! In primary I played Ned in a play, so I was into it in a big way. Forward 20 years to 2001, I was fortunate to finally get to the Old Melbourne Goal. I was in heaven (excuse the pun!) Visited Glenrowan and Beechworth again. It was a classic case of time travelling as I had pictures of myself taken in the exact-same-posistion/s as they were taken 20 years earlier! I own a copy of Jagger's portrayl on DVD. It still is a favourite. I say, thank god for the Internet and if I can help anyone in regards taping copies of the Last Outlaw on to VHS, then so be it! Hope you never yawn reading this.

I have heard a lot of rumours that the movie was not accurate to the truth so what really happened to Ned and his gang... not to mention his family who apparently were sentenced to hard labour? Okay, enough of the lies and rumours. If you want to seriously get to know Ned read our History section then go out and borrow or buy one of the biographies listed in our Book section. Then it will all make sense

Lonigan the coward?
From: Adrien Sweetman [sweetman@uq.net.au] 19 Oct 03
Was Thomas Lonigan the coward that sparked off the so called murders of Stringy Bark Creek? Was it the words from Ned Kelly in the street at Benalla that made him take cover, leaving Thomas McIntyre standing alone awaiting what he may have thought his last breath? I feel this is an avenue in the Kelly Outbreak that needs to be closely looked at. Does the actions of Thomas Lonigan on that day spell disaster for two others of the police party? It would be interesting to see what your readers feel may of happened if Lonigan had stood and surrendered?

If they asked the citizens i bet things would be diffrent... but i guess they want things there own way. I actually think, as a piece of Australian cinema, the movie is quite good. It's the “flowering” of the facts which has upset many people

Born when?
From: Bronson Burgoyne [bburgoyne2003@yahoo.com.au] 08 Oct 03
What is Ned Kelly date of birth? No official record exists which states the exact birth date. Historians are still divided as to the actual month. Ian Jones favours December 1854 while Max Brown was inclined to believe June 1855. In the near future, Bailup.com plans to conduct indepth research on this very subject

From: Grace [TMdellis@bigpond.com.au] 01 Oct 03
What the hell? I've visited a few sites over the place and some of them say that Dan Kelly actually wasnt killed at the Glenrowan showdown?!? What the hell? And some of the sites say that Dan managed to escape and lived a very very long life some where in the country and the cops thought he was Ned so he was arrested several times?!? Is this true or is it all actually CRAP?!? Dan and Steve died at Glenrowan. A few misguided fools, with an eye for making some quick money, are trying to convince us otherwise, but they would have better luck getting the Beatles back together

Senior Constable Michael Kennedy
From: Matt Sumner [normasum@ozemail.com.au] 01 Oct 03
I too am getting sick of Senior Constable Michael Kennedy's constant harping about his great grandfather's watch. Perhaps it was a low act but I hope someone points out to him someday that the less than exemplary conduct of Flood, Fitzpatrick, and Steele to name just a few, was pretty low as well. The police never gave Ned's sash back to his family and Joe's armour somehow found it's way to a private owner. Propping Joe's body up on the Benalla lock up door like a trophy of war was particularly unneccesary. No, the Victorian Police Force hasn't got a lot to be proud of in regards to the Kelly outbreak. Sergeant Kennedy's death must have been shattering for his family and I can understand some of his great grandsons feelings but a little more balance and perspective on his part would be nice. I'm sure Ellen Kelly cried just as hard for her lost boys. Yes, it seems there are too many people with rose coloured glasses when it comes to certain events in Australian history...

Am I on the right track?
From: Mogler, Justin [jmogler@newhopecoal.com.au] 01 Oct 03
Hi, I was just reading through your web site and thought you might be the right people to ask. My brother recently gave me a book called True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey. I have not been able to put it down, I am hooked. I have decided to go in search of more detail. I'm hoping that you might be able to help me get started. Firstly, have you heard of/read the above book? and if so, is it a true representation of the story? Unfortunately through most of my life I was taught that Ned Kelly was a thug and a villain and didn't deserve the attention that he seemed to get. As an adult I never gave it a lot of thought. After reading this book (which I accomplished in 2 nights), I am determined to find out more. I cannot believe that I have ignored this vital piece of Australian history for my entire life (32 yrs, so far). I have looked through your list of books and have contacted my local library to see which ones they could source for me. What other sources of Kelly information are available? (i.e. Web sites, etc.) I have found plenty of information that seems made up or ill informed, I'm hoping to avoid as much of that as I can. I would also like to ensure that I don't pass the same ignorance onto my children as was passed onto me. Are there places of interest that I could take my family to on holidays to help them (and me) better understand the life and unfortunate death of Ned Kelly? I appreciate that you may be busy and unable to help out, and if that is the case, please accept my thanks for your informative web site. Stick with us and you cant go wrong!

I don't know if you noticed this or not but a few weeks ago in the Hearald Sun i found a article titled 'Setting a legend straight'. It's promoting Blue Ribbon Day and contains a brief interview with Sgt Michael Kennedy's great-grandson Mick Kennedy. (from that shocker of a documentry on Ned Kelly on ABC a month or so ago) In this interview he says 'A lot of people are trying to make a saint out of a bully and a buffon and a horse thief, but it is pure fantasy'. Then it goes on to say 'Sgt Michael Kennedy was one of 3 police-men slain by Kelly's gang on October 26, 1878, at Stringybark creek. A member of the Kelly clan stole Sgt Kennedy's fob watch as he lay dying.' This is completely disgraceful, not only have they used a word like 'slain' but they seemed to have forgotten to mention that the Kelly's killed in self-defence, they never would of resorted to this horrible task if the police had just surrended and not wanted to be heroe's which just ended in themselves getting killed anyway. But what is truly disgusting is stating that the Kelly's stole Kennedy's watch 'as he lay dying'. Ned shot him in his chest after Kennedy raised his arm in surrender but with the amount of blood on Kennedy's arm and in the fading light mistook it for the gun. Then as the poor Sgt lay dying in terrible pain Ned did what any half decent human-being would do and shot Kennedy dead instead of leaving him to slowly die in complete agony. THEN, they only stole the watch because like what Ian Jones and so many other people have said now the Kelly's were outlaws so they needed supplies, food, horses and especially watches beacuse now time was everything. Then they left Kennedy RESPECTFULLY, dead, with a cloak over his body. They had not wanted to kill the troopers like the article more then willingly suggests to the public. I understand you probably already know this but i wanted to bring the article to your and others peoples attention just in case you didn't. PS I'm actually a 14 year old girl, i'd show you my birth certificate if i could. Well I think I believe your age now, seeing your gender is female. Not too many 14 year old boys out there with such an acid wit. I wonder if the police will ever hold a memorial for all the innocent people they killed over the past 150 years. The role call for the Aboriginal population would be horrendous!

Leave them alone!
From: Kate [kate_who@hotmail.com] 26 Sep 03
I was reading through the information you have on Ned Kelly and what happened to him after he was killed, I was absolutely disgusted to find out that “after his execution his head was cut off and the brain was removed and that Medical students then dissected the body. The flesh was boiled away from the skull, which was then shaved and oiled to become a ghoulish souvenir”. This nearly made me puke! And then I saw the picture of Joe’s body hung up on the door of the Benalla lock up which made thing worse. Why did this happen? Why werent they left alone and buried properly? These men didn’t deserve for their bodies to be put up on display or to be disected, some people might think ohhh it’s a great souvenior blah blah blah but after all the sh*t they went through is a little peace too much to ask for?!

Ned Kelly the movie
From: Tiana [fastand_furious003@yahoo.com] 25 Sep 03
I just saw Ned Kelly the movie...and really liked it...I've noticed that heaps of ppl think its crap coss its not accurate with the facts....most of the movie actually is....hope u ppl didnt expect it to be totaly correct to every little detail because no1 knows everything there's to know bout Ned Kelly and no1 will ever know the whole story....The guy that made Ned kelly tryed to make the movie as accurate as possible and he wanted the audience to know that Ned was a good guy who had real feelings and didnt go round killing people for no reason...and thats exactly what he made us understand... Yes, I particularly liked the historically correct ending to the last stand at Glenrowan. Seems men like Max Brown and Ian Jones got it all wrong...

Read Sister Kate
From: Banjo [true_blue_22235@hotmail.com] 21 Sep 03
G’day, remember me?? Haha probably not, but anyway. After looking through all your book reviews i noticed that you have pretty much reveiwed every single fiction book bout ned kelly and co on the market except probably one of the best ones ever written bout him, (not including 'Our Sunshine', which is like i said before complete utter bullsh*t but a master piece of Australian literature) called 'Sister Kate'. It's fiction, lets just clear that up to avoid having any more 'misunderstandings'and it explores the life of Ned's younger sister Kate Kelly and allows you to walk in the shoes of one of the people left behind after the whole Kelly outbreak and what the poor buggers were going through, it also includeds a love affair between Joe Byrne and Kate, which may leave you feeling rather randy (who says you need porn, eh Brad?). It's written by another great Australian author Jean Bedford, and is a very moving piece though very thin, so, if you have rather small gap on your Ned Kelly shelf in-between Ian Jones's 'Ned Kelly' and the ornament of Ned in his armour then this is the perfect thing to stuff-in there. A FANTASTIC read leaving you crying for more. P.S Can you go without saying any smart ass comments this time Brad? There's a good boy... Hmm, I think Ellen Hollow would have a word or two to say about Jean Bedford’s book. Why fictionalise Kate’s life? Why not write a great biography? Besides Carey and Drewe, works of fiction rarely get the chance of a second reprint. I have read “Sister Kate” but feel free to put in your own review as many of my readers have done previously. There’s a good boy...

Leave Robert Drewe alone!
From: Banjo [true_blue_22235@hotmail.com] 19 Sep 03
I would just like to congragulate the maker of this site (sorry mate, i forget your name) for such a ripper of a site, but u have seriously pissed me off after reading your report on Robert Drewe's Our Sunshine. Now it dosen't take a Ned Kelly Einstein with a life-time worth of research to back him up like Ian Jones (bloody legend!) to realise that many of the events and a few characters in Drewe's novel are a great load of smelly bullshit, but his book isn't labled under Fiction for nothing. He portrayed a marvoulous view for his readers into Ned Kelly's world and what was going through the poor buggers head at the time and the amount of detail included was mind-blowing (not to mention a few bucket loads of those increadibly rarely-used, interesting words which popped up farely regualy which i had no idea what they meant, but, Hey! they sounded good anyway!). Robert Drewe is one of the best writters in Australia and one of my favourite writters of all time. i have read his book more then 3 times and could read it 100 times more and still be left feeling full of the same passion and inspiration i recieved from it the first time i read it. i may be only 14 years old but i seem to know a great writer and aussie icon when i see one, when people like you who considered themselves the most wonderful things to be brought to this world since slice bread cause you have a website, books and god knows what else to boost up your already large egos stand up on ur soap boxes and shout down everyone else, well i think its about time someone climbed up their and shouted you down, what do ya reackon? And in answer to your question 'what is it with the lion?' the lion is a symbol of how Ned Kelly is feeling, trapped in a cage and no-where to go, pacing backwards and forwards in nervous agony at whats going to become of it... sh*t, you'd think a bloke with a big soap box to stand on and a great long-running website like this would know that. tut-tut-tut... Does Kelly's core life really need to be fictionalised? What part of his story needs flowering up? There are far better books out there which deserve far more recognition. That was why Gregor Jordan’s movie was such a disappointment to so many people. And sorry Banjo, you are definitely not fourteen — unless you are only counting leap years!

Hi, Brad, First up, I would like to thank you for the showcasing of my essay, Like a Moth to the Flame. I am getting quite alot of positive feedback on it. Next, I would like to address the question of whether George Miller of Mad Max fame was the same George Miller who worked on The Last Outlaw. It would seem it is not the same person, at least according to the Internet Movie Database at us.imdb.com/name/nm0004305/

Great site. I am afraid that I have not logged on for a long time and I forgot how good this site was. I was very interested in reading Ian Jones' comments regarding the recent documentary on television. I would have to agree with him regarding Bantick. Few facts and lots of publicity driven hype. I have just spent an hour reading your feedback vault ( not all of it just what I could fit in) and I have enjoyed myself immensely. I am looking forward to being in Albury to hear Ian and am wondering if any of you guys - yourself or Dave or others will be there. I would like the opportunity of saying g'day. Is this the long lost legend Mr Cheeseman?

Mr. Miller
From: Aidan Phelan [angelathornton@optusnet.com.au] 10 Sep 03
I was wathchin an episode of The Last Outlaw the other day which my uncle had taped for me. In the opening credits I believe that it said that the associate producer was a man named George Miller. Is this the same Miller that was responsible for the Mad Max films and Babe? Seeing as you have the book on the show Brad I was wondering if it said as much in there. Mad Max and Ned Kelly, now there’s a combination!

Channel 7 Petition for The Last Outlaw
From: Andre van Schouwenburg [outlawandre@hotmail.com] 08 Sep 03
I just want to find out how I can put my name on the Channel 7 Petition for the Last Outlaw. If there is no way for me to do it myself (on the internet, etc), then could you do it for me. I hope The Last Outlaw does get released. I was surprised that Channel 7 doesn't show it much anymore. The bosses in Sydney never seem to authorise it. I hope it gets repeated more often on Channel 7. They told me that they don't actually have the rights for it. I think The Last Outlaw is the best series I've ever seen. I'm a big Ned Kelly fan. The petition is now closed and the possibilty of the release of the Last Outlaw is now in the hands of the Gods...

Banticks Antics
From: Trevor Harbord [trevor.h@optusnet.com.au] 07 Sep 03
How could a major network or newspaper justify giving a demented Loopy yellow spleened anti Australian unfulfilled Ratbag like Christopher Bantick airplay? I am totally stumped. His anti Kelly dementia is bizzare in every way. Did Ned meet him in a past life and steal his girlfriend? I hope so! If a documentary (Outlawed) did not have a preconceived message to get across they would have no need for so called historians of his breed.  Where does Bantick get his info from? Like  Ian Jones says present the facts let the viewer decide for themselves. Not only does Bantick present his angry opinion he inserts outright lies within his dribble. The police profiler of The Jerilderie Letter was a waste of time, he is biast from the offset, being a trap and all. The Stringybark shootings were portrayed  as the Walsh Street police killings (as if the cops were ambushed and executed in cold blood). To the Producers of Outlawed shame on you! Getting back to Bantick he is only given the media time  because he goes against the grain and that sometimes sells papers. We desperately need an open honest 3 or 4 hour doco with Jonesy or similiar quality historian providing the content. Just one last think on Bantick youre a cop tosser! LONG LIVE NED!

Nolan’s Ned Kelly
From: Warwick Morris [weandus@iprimus.com.au] 29 Aug 03
I have been drawing and sketching Ned Kelly for a number of years now. I have only recently come across the Ironoutlaw web site. It is a fine site and has provide me with a wealth of information both for my drawings and my knowledge of Ned Kelly himself. I must say I am not a fan of Sidney Nolan's Ned Kelly art, in some ways I think it belittles and makes fun of the man Ned and his story. But who am I to compared to the great Nolan. As you say on your Soap Box page “I have to vent my spleen” sometime and it feels good too. Any way keep up the good work. “Show me the paintings!”

Steve Hart and Dan Kelly
From: Robert I. Hart [robert.i.hart@tafensw.edu.au] 25 Aug 03

I would like to tell you a family story about the shout out at glenrowen that my gandmother and other elders of my family told and that was that when the police arived at glenrowen and the kelly gang where in the inn ned told the the boys stev and dan that it was all over and it was his fight and his alone so when ned surposable left to tell the people to stay away infact the whole kelly gang of stev dan and ned left the inn and then ned went back to finish what he had started after say his good bye's to stev and dan newspapers reported the death of stev and dan and stev and dan read of there death at my grandmother place in south australia and of the capture and pending trial of ned it took alot of argueing with dan and stev to stop them from going back to try and help ned and making him realise there was nothing they could do for ned and they had to think of themself and the family before they packed supplies and disappearing to a place unknown to our side of the family. I do not know weather this story is fact or fiction but it is something that my family elders have said time and time again and there is no variation in the story and all have gone to the grave telling it and in the bit that is known about that day it is not imposable that it may have some truth .To me it is food for thought and i must add i have not gone to much into this and there is a lot more detail in the story told than what i have written and can remember. This will make Gary Dean very happy

Ned Kelly
From: Lisa [cath@hotmail.com] 23 Aug 03

I know what Ned Kelly did was wrong and all but i know he only did it because he wanted to protect his family. If it were you would you let them walk all over you?. I dont think so. He killed 3 police people but they lied to get him in trouble. They could not find anyway at getting him cought for anything so they framed him for somthing he did not do. Me personley i know he is not bad not bad at all. I dont know what you all think out there. He did alot of good things as well. If it were now he would have gotton off because he was only protecting his family and himselfe. Well that is my oppein ok keep up the great work guys and bye bye. It’s all clearer now

A New Perspective
From: Vani [sweetytweety65@hotmail.com] 20 Aug 03
I am a high school student in Sydney who unwillingly chose Ned Kelly as the subject of my History Extension major project, as my teacher promised me there would be many sources and much debate, especially following the release of the Heath Ledger movie. I must admit that I was not keen on the idea of doing my project on Ned at the beginning. I had planned to research Hatshepsut and ancient Egypt but material available was quite limited. However this site has changed my perspective. I watched the August 6 'documentary' as one of my sources and was confused by it, as through other sources, I remembered that Ned Kelly was supposed to have killed Kennedy so that he would not suffer longer, among other discrepancies. However I might have taken it for granted, had I not come to this site and read Ian Jones' critique. Thank you for a new perspective.

Ned did not kill Kennedy!!
From: Harrykim [harrykim01@optusnet.com.au] 12 Aug 03
On studying the first eyewitness accounts of Kelly and Mcintyre, I find it not unreasonable to conclude that Dan Kelly shot and Killed Kennedy. Not Ned. Kelly stated he changed the fowling piece ammo from shot to bullets. Kennedy’s autopsy shows he died form shot at close range. Kelly stated Kennedy fired at his brother Dan, then claims he shot at him, resulting in him going after him. It could be that Ned was covering for his younger brother Dan by owning up to the killing. Ned also says he left Kennedy in a dignified manor, “I put his cloak over him and left him as honourable as I could, and if they were my own brothers I could not be more sorry for them”. Why would Ned then take the policeman's Gold Watch? Has anyone else had similar conclusions? Compelling argument...

Lecture by Chief Justice of Victoria: Kelly Trial
From: Brian Lamb [baslamb@hotmail.com] 11 Aug 03
I attended the lecture at Kilmore Court House on Sunday, 10th August where an audience of standing room only heard the Chief Justice of Victoria, John Phillips, present a lecture on the pro's and con's of the trial of Ned Kelly. It was interesting to note that despite the overwhelming evidence that Ned acted (in part) out of self defence in the shooting of Lonigan, which with good defence counsell should have resulted in McIntyre's perjured evidence being exposed and a lesser charge of Manslaughter perhaps pursued against Ned, this learned man of the 20th century still feels that the resultant outcome of Death by hanging was inevitable- From the instant of Fitzpatrick's false-hood Ned was a condemmed man and that remains the most undeniable fact. I didn’t even know this event was on!

re: Ned Kelly Documentary on ABC
From: Sharon and Chuck [sharonandchuck@myfastmail.com] 08 Aug 03
Brad, even without seeing this documentary on Ned Kelly, I can tell you who Christopher Bantick is. You or some of your readers might recall the remarks Mr. Bantick made in a disturbingly titled newspaper article The Real Ned Kelly Was Nothing But a Colonial Terrorist published earlier this year. It included tripe such as calling Ned a "thug" and then went on to speak of "Kelly's short and malevolent life" and that "he had planned for Glenrowan a Bali-type massacre." Christopher Bantick clearly showed a decidedly anti-Kelly public stance way before the airing of this documentary. Bantick is a journalistic terrorist!

Ned Kelly Documentary on ABC
From: Mick Fitzsimons [mickfitzsimons@hotmail.com] 08 Aug 03
I have just watched Outlawed: The Real Ned Kelly, that featured on the ABC. It was a bit hard to know where they were going with it. On one hand they explained the injustices which helped shape Ned and then on the other they made outrageous statements like the gang were heavily armed at Stringybark Creek and they murdered (unlawful, premeditated killing of a human being) three policemen. Then they show that moron, Christopher Banter (sorry Bantik, banter was what he did), who obviously has never read any decent material on the subject (and there was plenty written by police that incriminated themselves) or done any real research. The criminal profiler who was featured, also shows an obvious lack of knowledge on the subject and one would have to question his use of modern day criminal minds to compare with poor simple people of 150 years ago, how they lived and the hardships they faced. The descendant of Sergeant Kennedy asked why the gang didn?t simply move on when they found the police camp. Again, this remark shows a lack of knowledge of events on behalf of the speaker. What started out looking like a good doco, shot itself in the foot. And might I add, that irritating Irish accent depicting Ned was a real turn off. I ask you, how much can a koala bear? Took the words right out of my mouth! And who is this Christopher Bantik, up till Wednesday night I've never even heard of him?

Okay, okay. So I really have two questions. I have not long finished watching The Big Pictures version of the Ned Kelly story and it has left me a tad miffed. Why, why, why, do people not get the point of Ned Kelly's battle for fighting the good fight of freedom, equality and loyalty? I digress. My other question was, where would I get my hands on a copy of the movie Beseiged to watch? No idea as to the Beseiged doco but I wouldn’t be parting with dollars until you saw it. Once its five shots were fired, he was unable to re-load. During the Jerilderie hold-up Ned took a .36 calibre Colt Navy revolver from Senior Constable Devine. When Ned fell at the end of his Last Stand, it was wrenched from his hand by railway guard, Jesse Dowsett.

Ned’s Armour
From: Andrew Bodley [Andrew.Bodley@armouries.org.uk] 28 Jul 03
Hi, I work at the Royal Armouries museum in Britain. The Royal Armouries is the National Museum of Arms and Armour and was originally in the Tower of London. We opened a new museum in 1996 in Leeds, which has a department on interpreters who's job is to bring the collection to life. This ranges from medieval jousting to soldiers experiences in Bosnia. We have planned for September an event based around “Outlaws”. One of the interpretations we will be performing is on Ned Kelly. As such I have to make a copy of his armour. Is there anywhere that has photographs of his armour from all angles and dimensions and weights? I have found your web site very useful and also the State Library of Victoria has some dimensions and information but only front on photographs. Any help or ideas of where I can find this information will be appreciated. The State Library of Victoria had a recent exhibition which displayed a full 3D computer graphic depiction of Ned's suit mapped from the original so the author would have all the exact details. You can try chasing it up from the website and get a look at the impressive work in question at:

Hello. First of all you have a most informative website. I am a student studying Australian History and beforehand knew very little about Ned Kelly. Now that doesnt make alot of sense seeing as though I am currently getting an education within Australia and we do not get taught anything about a national icon. However, I was wondering if someone could give me hand with a study I am currently doing. I am posing a question for an essay I have to do which is along the lines of “To what extent do sidney nolan's Ned Kelly series of paintings depict Ned Kelly as a hero or villain?” What do you think of this question and also do you know of any good sources I could use in relation to this question? Do you know of an alternate question I could do? You see I want to pick a question which is slightly different to the normal questions asked and thought someone who actually runs a Ned Kelly website may be the best person to ask. If you do not want to help me I understand, but do you know of anyone I could write to who would be happy to give me a hand? Any Kellyites out there eager to give this student a hand feel free to write to her at kolemangof@bigpond.com

Would like your opinion on “House near Glenrowan”

Saw this while surfing for Ned, I have read alot of Kelly history yet I have never heard that Ned and Dan supposedly built a house together near Glenrowan, I would appreciate your opinion on the matter, please find page address above. "Farnley" at Cesney Vale, a pink granite house, was built by Ned in 1875-6 with the completion date carved by Ned in one of the granite blocks. Dan had nothing to do with the structure

Re: Ned Kelly magazine
From: Brian McDonald [brianmac@isp.net.au] 22 Jul 03

The magazine was published around 1962. As you can see it is made up of short stories about several bushrangers including Ned. Be wary though, quite a few mistakes and previous authors' errors have been perpetuated throughout.

Paul and AnthonyI cannot believe the outburst by Llama with his opinion of what occurred at the Commemorative weekend. Well Llama the buck stops with me. I was the one who had the honour to carry in Joe Byrne's armour and to help assemble it. I was the one who placed the helmet on people's heads, the majority being young school children. I did it not out of "disgusting self indulgence" as you described, but out of hope that this might inspire some of them to take interest in one of the greatest stories of Persecution, Bravery and Injustice in our countries brief white history. I told each person how special they were to be present and to remember this moment forever and its something to tell their grandchildren about this. I take offence in the way you made it out to be somehow a gawking unemotional experience. Never for one minute did I loose sight of the fact that this historic piece once belonged to an amazing young man who was killed wearing his body armour. I was there as many others were to honour the memory of Ned, Dan, Joe and Steve and to remember the tragic circumstances that took place some 123 years ago. Some of us present Llama, lost family members on that terrible night. Whether people believe it was wrong or right is irrelevant, I did it with the best of intentions and I stand behind what occurred. I won't tolerate any unjust comments from someone who wasn't present to witness what actually happend and the circumstances in which they occurred.

History project
From: Erin Sharp [erin_sharp03@hotmail.com] 21 Jul 03
Mr Webb, I am a year 12 student doing an Extension History research project on Ned Kelly and the legends and myths surrounding him. I have found your website so helpful in every aspect of my project so far and was wondering if it was possible for you to give me some advice, tips or information on anything regarding Ned. My project is concerned somewhat with the historiography of Ned, how he has been protrayed by history writers over the years since his death. I am currently reading my way through Ian Jones' A Short Life and I can see that he is quite sympathetic towards Ned. Do you know of any writers who are not? It seems to me that the majority of the Australian public regard Ned as the national hero, especially after the release of Gregor Jordan's Ned Kelly. Would you agree? Any information at all would be helpful. If you can find the time to respond to this e-mail I am very grateful. Mr Webb, I like it! Virtually every book written prior to J J Kenneally's "Inner History of the Kelly Gang" (first published 1929) was anti Kelly. All the major police named in the 1881 Royal Commission tried to blame away their lazy actions through publishing their "true" accounts. "The last of the bushrangers" by Francis Augustus Hare is a prime example of a disgraced policeman trying to clear his name. So take a look in one of the major libraries, you'll be surprised and alarmed at what you'll find.

Opinion on the Heath Ledger Kelly Movie
From: Lynelle Crawford [lynelle_crawford@msn.com] 20 Jul 03
Hi Brad. I'm just throwing in my five cents about the latest Kelly movie. In my opinon the less you know about the the true facts concerning the Kelly Gang, the less you will pick the movie to pieces. I don't put the acting in the movie down, it is the story line that bothered me. It had a pretty lame ending and in places it was far from the true facts. A lot of what I know of Ned Kelly comes from Ian Jones' book. A good place to start

Llama… Am I addressing a man or a member of the camel family? At least I have the courage of my convictions to put my name to my statements, rather than hide behind a pseudonym. Whatever the case, it certainly seems that the Queensland sun has sizzled your cranium. I resent being referred to as a weed – maybe that’s your vice of choice. Especially coming from a bloke who I’ve never seen at a Kelly function. Don't get me wrong, I can handle criticism. But when it deteriorates to name-calling I just couldn’t just bite my tongue for fear that some people might actually take what dribbles from the llama’s mouth, besides foam, as gospel. (‘The Gospel According to the Dalai Llama.’) I think your main problem, among others, is jealousy. You can’t tell me that if you had the chance, you wouldn’t wear Joe Byrne’s helmet. Don’t kid yourself. You’d be in for that kind of ‘self-indulgence’. Heck, your gob-off session in this feedback section was nothing if not self-indulgent. I know a few people who only have a passing interest in the Kelly Gang but would love to know what it's like to wear one of the helmets. By writing a story about it, I was sharing the experience with readers. That’s hardly ‘selfish’. I admit that Joe's helmet – or ‘hat’ as you ridiculously termed it – was flaunted by a select few last year, and I too was disgusted. This year was much different though. If you had been there, llama, you would know. By the way, you referred to the dinner as a ‘centennial’ event. Enlighten me. What happened in the Kelly saga in 1903? But aside from all of the above, it’s good to see that you're actually checking out what a real website is about. I checked yours out. I won’t get those 90 seconds back. And a little hint: use the spell-check before you send a message into cyberspace. Incorrect spelling doesn’t do much for our perception of your intelligence. Guess the llama’s been “pegged” (that’s a camel related joke). I've actually deleted the original email from the bloke 'cause he's such a wanker! If he wants to whine he can do it on his own site.

Peter Carey
From: Emily Eltringham
[tabluca@hotmail.com] 08 Jul 03

Unfortunately I was introduced to Ned and his Gang through Peter Carey's The True History of the Kelly Gang, (which I now know is a piece of fiction!). I really enjoyed it, as I knew very little of their history, but would like to thank you for your excellent site that has opened my eyes up the facts, particularly that Peter Carey had a thing for transvestism! I am now looking forward to spending many hours exploring the site, and learning more about the TRUE histroy of the Kelly Gang from a more reliable source. Thank you! Come back soon

Blood in the Dust

Hi to you Brad. I am trying to find on your site the book mentioned on my Seige Dinner menu, that Angeline Baron had been working on. It was a good night and I enjoyed meeting people and putting faces to the names. Yes, Angeline’s new book will be titled “Blood in the Dust” and what I've seen so far it will be a bloody good read. Take a sneak peek in our Books section
TEACHING HISTORY
While not everyone wants to read about Ned Kelly or the ANZACs or even The Great Depression, we hope they want to learn something about Australian History. From the ex-Prime Minister John Howard to a confused ex-NSW Education Minister Carmel Tebbutt (see the 'ex' pattern here?) a number of politicians have jumped on the teaching history bandwagon. But at what cost? From right wingers to a multitude of meddling State Governments, it seems everyone has an agenda. We'd like to let the readers decide what is worth learning. Here at IronOutlaw.com we present the facts, the fiction and everything in between. It all adds to the experience and hopefully makes history an exciting place to be while also proving it doesn't always have to be written by the victors.
