From: Chris and Bill [chrissie@netbay.com.au]

Hello there, we have 2 portraits the
first is of ELLEN KELLY who is Ned's mother, she was
about 30 years old size of this is 46 x 35 cm, this
is an authentic portrait, Ian Jones has seen it and
agrees that it is the real deal. The second one is
of ALICE KELLY KING Ned's youngest sister the size
is 46 x 35cm. this is also authentic, this was taken
when Alice was about 26 years old. These have been
in our family for over one houndred years, we were
wondering if they carry any value? If so how much?
Jackpot!

Bound for Judgement
From: Juliana Byers [rowena.byers@acecommunications.com.au]
19 Jul 07
Hello! You have heard for me before and I hope there isn't a rule that says I
can only contact you once. I would just like to say to your readers that if you
are looking for a book on Ned Kelly DO NOT read Bound
for Judgment! Not that there is anything seriously wrong with the book,
aside from the fact that you can never tell if the author is talking about Ned
or Dan or Steve or Joe (or any other random person who pops up in the Kelly Story
because of the ansence of names!). I would also like to ask you two questions:
1) In the list of Kelly sympathisers on your website you spell the shortening
of Steve Hart's sister Esther, 'Etty' rather than 'Ettie', I have never seen
it spelt 'Etty' and was wondering who wrote that list.
2) Again about the list of sympathisers and about Steve Hart's family and again
pretty much the same question because whoever did write that list (if it was
you I don\'t mean to offend you) put Richard Hart Sr. (Steve's father) as a 'sibling'!
Anyway, if you could get back to me that would be great! Thanks a million!

Dan Kelly and Steve Hart
From: Juliana Byers [rowena.byers@acecommunications.com.au]
03 Jun 07
On the suvival of Dan Kelly, 19, and Steve Hart, 21,
I have to say that I believe that Dan and Steve died
at Glenrowan. This is because many of the stories revoloving
around their possible suvival only focus on Dan! I
find it had to believe that (if the stories of suvival
were true) only Dan suvived or that both Dan and Steve
suvived and then wetn in seperate directions! Men was
go through things like that together and suvive do
not split up after the event! Therefore I have to say
that Dan Kelly and Steve Hart commited suicide at Glenrowan,
hopefully be shooting themselves because i hate to
think of them taking poison, being overcome by the
smoke or giving themselves up to the flames! Although,
I will admit, the stories that tell of the suvival
are well worth a read, even just for fun.

Sir: Thank you for the reply. Of course, this was a
lesson learned on my part about asking naive questions

Kelly Scrimshaw
From: R Tilbury [r_tilbury@yahoo.com]
29 Apr 07
Good Morning: I believe, what could ultimately be,
a piece of scrimshaw on a cow horn that appreas to
be almost identiucal and style and motif to Red Kelly's
work. I have only been able to view partial pictures
of what was posted online before the auction of the
two recenlty discivered scrimashaw's of members of
the Kelly Gang. After doing my research, I think it
is quite possible that I have another one that could
depict gang members Ned, Steve or Dan, and possibly
Kate or another of the gang dressed as female as in
the other scrimshaw. Of course this is wild speculation
from a person that is not an expert in the field. But,
from the trademark motifs of his father and depiction
of the mouths and Ned compared to the two horns that
went up for auction this could be authentic. I have
a few poor jpegs but wil send you more if interested.
The amazing thing is if this is authentic it may shed
some light on a bit of iconic Australian history! Cheers. Sorry
but I've spoken to a number of Kelly Gang descendants
and they all agree your scrimshaw claim is total fantasy.
The closest thing Red Kelly got to a decorative cow
horn would be one splattered in blood as he was carving
it up for stewing steak...

You are right Alan, because Elvis has definitely NOT
left the building. It is difficult to argue with those
that will not see reason. There is so much that continues
to be printed and re printed even though there is documented
proof that says otherwise. Whilst we all want to make
them "take it back", the more that we argue
with the unreasonable the more they dig their heels
in. The more we argue, the more publicity. For example
- the councillor Tully. I don't have the answer. Neither
the "fight it out" or the "ignore and
it will go away" approach has ever stopped journalists
and "experts" from placing their own spin
on the facts. For most of us it is a case of "here
we go again". I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

G' day Brad, I just love this feedback section! Crikey
Rus, why get so upset about a pair of old carved up
cow horns. What's their significance in the Kelly story?
Now if you had a copy of Ned's birth certificate or
a copy of his proclamation for N.E.Victoria, I think
you'd be on a winner. If they've been in the family
for so long, leave them up on the mantelpiece beside
the stuffed moose head where they belong and try not
to upset the web master, you know what he thinks about
cow horns, and he's only going to get upset and take
it out on the rest of us. So Rus, just be happy with
the fact you have your cow horns and treasure them
just like I do with my teddy...
Hi Mick, A mate sent me a copy of the A.P.J VOL. 60.
The Ned article was titled Ned
Kelly The Murderer Unmasked. It was written
by a Martin Leonard an ex Federal policeman who is
now manager of passports section in Foreign Affairs.
He's got a B.O.A from Monash Uni and a B.O.L from the
Macquarie Uni so I suppose he's pretty smart. Smart
enough to get a lot of his information from the Argus
newspapers of the time and we all know how unbiased
they were. I believe the information of Kennedy having
his ears sliced off also came from a well known forensic
journalist working for the Argus at the time. The crap
just went on and on until finally at the end of his
fictitious ramblings he came up with this gem. While
he was looking at the helmet worn by Ned Kelly himself,
on display at the National Library, he couldn't help
but (think?) the helmet was, and I quote, 'metaphorical
representation of the manner in which the Kelly legend
has been presented: a narrow and restricted vision
devoid of peripheral view, the wearer disorientated
by shouts and clamours greatly distorted and amplified.'
Unquote. Now ain't that a cracker. Was Marty trying
on that helmet when he wrote that article or was he
simply a policeman looking through the eyes of a typical
journalist? A most believable and righteous combination
as we all know. We believe in our own minds what the
truth is Mick, so I suppose that's all that really
matters. By the way mate, I have it on good authority
Harold Holt was not killed, but kidnapped by aliens
and has formed his own political party on the planet
Xeon which is only inhabited by young bikini clad women,
and Rus, don't forget to keep your powder dry in that
cow horn of yours, and no more nasty language to the
web master.

re. Stringybark Creek
From: Mick Fitzsimons [mickfitzsimons@hotmail.com]
29 Mar 07
Having posted the story in the South Australian Police
Online Journal about the Stringybark Creek incident,
and seeing no follow-ups, it would seem that I did
not make the article as appear as outrages as it was.
I therefore quote part of what was stated about the
death of Sgt. Kennedy. This description could only
have come from an eye witness, that was clearly not
available to the author of this piece of fabrication.
This undocumented fabricated ranting, does not take
into account Ned’s version of what happened,
or where Kennedy was eventually found by Police search
parties some 5 days later. If this account is what
Allan L. Peters calls thorough police investigation
and conclusion, then God help anyone being investigated
by the police. Let us not forget that no-one has been
convicted for the death of Harold Holt, or even JFK
for that matter, so none of us are safe. Below is an
extract from that piece of journalistic garbage.
Kennedy had continued to fire bravely at his attackers
as he backed slowly away. Just as he was about to fire
yet another round, he suddenly took a bone-shattering
bullet to his arm. His revolver slipped from his now
useless hand as blood poured from his coat sleeve.
Fallen to the ground with his back to a tree, Kennedy
sat facing the killers. They sat themselves in front
of Kennedy, before they began to taunt and threaten
him with death. Dan Kelly several times put the muzzle
of his revolver to Kennedy’s chest and threatened
to pull the trigger. Kennedy, with sheer contempt,
pushed it aside. As the other three cold-bloodedly
discussed what they would to do with the sergeant,
Dan Kelly once again placed the muzzle of his weapon
to Kennedy’s chest. This time, he calmly squeezed
the trigger. Sergeant Kennedy died instantly. Before
the gang left the blood-soaked scene of wanton murder,
Ned Kelly, insisted that each of its members fire bullets
into the bodies of the dead policemen. This would fully
implicate each of them in the crimes. For this, and
other similar evil deeds, Ned Kelly and his murderous
band of thugs would later be elevated to the status
of “folk heroes”. While
I'm loath to push this story too much as I don't want
to give this Peters prick any credos, I have to agree
with you Mick in that something needs to be said about
his outrageous claims. In the end we can be content
in the knowledge that long after this bloke is dead
and buried we will still be talking about Ned Kelly.
Bottom line is Allan L. Peters is nothing more than
an opportunity whore who thinks he scored his biggest
lay...

Hello from the USA
From: Emily [rainbowseastar3188@yahoo.com]
26 Mar 07
Hey! I just wanted to say I'm 19 year old American
college student who has recently become fascinated
with Ned Kelly's story. (It's actually been a long
time since I've become as interested in a historic
event or person as much as I am in him and his story.)
I'm not sure why, but something about this story really
fascinates and rings a bell with me, and I can't stop
looking up information. I just wanted to say thank
you for this wonderful site! If I ever decide to write
a paper on Ned Kelly (which is possible, if I ever
receive the assignment that I can use him for) I will
definitely use this site as an important source. As
a side note, I, of course, would love to say that I'm
completely on Ned's side, and I would like to believe
that he is more of a noble Robin Hood figure than a
wild outlaw robbing banks and shooting people, although
it seems like the contents of the Jerilderie Letter
suggest otherwise. From what I've read about him so
far (which admittedly isn't a huge amount), I've more
or less decided that the state his community and his
family were in at the time were what led him to criminal
activity, and he probably wouldn't have gone there
otherwise. Yes, he killed people, which is never EVER
right and I'm in no way excusing that, but he tried
to justify everything politically. I guess what I'm
trying to say is that to me, Ned was more of a freedom
fighter using the end to justify the means, rather
than a criminal using politics to justify his crimes.

Stringybark Creek
From: Mick Fitzsimons [mickfitzsimons@hotmail.com]
18 Mar 07
Having read an article in the South Australian Police
Online Journal about the Stringybark Creek incident,
I thought other Kelly enthusiasts, might like to see
what the one persons police version was like policejournalsa.org.au/0406/22a.php.
The article knocks historians and aims to set the story
straight, according to Allan L. Peters, the author.
Filled with minute detail about how Sergeant Kennedy
died, the author obviously interviewed one of those
present. It just goes to show, that by spreading this
rubbish to it’s members the attitude of some
police has not changed since that beginning of settlement.
Hence their secret motto, “It’s better
to convict an innocent man, than no man at all.” At
least the author appears to try and distance himself
from historians, so he and his crystal ball must get
a lot of work in S.A. Hard
to argue with you when you constantly read about the
goings on in the Victorian Police Association. Never
let the facts get in the way of a good story...

Framing Ned Kelly in your Books section

As is made obvious, this book IS CLEARLY intended for
children (8-12 years). Could you please amend your
entry on this book! Thanks. Louise Martin-Chew (the
author) I showed this
book to my niece who is 9 and her reaction was like
I handed her an instruction book to a VCR. I scanned
through this tome from front to back and found no reference
to any child's age or inference. Am I missing something?
The book's been out since 1992, the review was done
in 1997 so the blistering speed in correcting our error
is astounding! Are we planning a re-release?
The Edgar Penzig Mug
From: Paul O'Keefe [info@kellygangeducational.com]
12 Mar 07
Dear Brad, I read with amusement Ross Whitby's glowing
admiration and strenuous defence of historian, Mr Edgar
Penzig and his "factual" version of the Kelly
story. Edgar was the Historical Consultant providing
the "historical" information on a mug I have
in my possession. (my Mum actually bought it for me!!!
). According to Mr Whitby "his dates and facts
are spot on". Mr Whitby states Penzig did not
write fiction like Carey or Clune but what about these "spot
on facts" Mr Penzig has authorised? This is what
is says on the Mug, you be the judge:
Edward (NED) Kelly Born 1854, Kelly grew up within
a lawless family, and at age 15 committed robbery
under arms with the bushranger Harry Power. Eventually
taking to full time crime, he then murdered three
policeman, and after being caught was hanged in November,
1880.
The mug is from Bonztek ceramics and the information
on the underside of the Mug also reads:
"Ned Kelly"
Premiere issue in the series
Australian Bush Rangers
Historical Consultant Edgar Penzig F.A.I.H.A P.H.F (whatever
these letters mean)
Ameralia's Plate World Katoomba NSW
Paul O'Keefe, Descendant of the Kelly Gang, www.kellygangeducational.com Apparently
the letters F.A.I.H.A P.H.F have nothing to do with
the awarding of any degree. Having no formal qualifications
in this area obviously disturbed him enough to make
up his own (don't ask me why he just didn't go to
Uni) and even print up an impressive looking certificate!
I think there's one hanging on the wall at Gary Dean's
shop in Glenrowan. So I guess it's a "mug's
game" backing Penzig! Actually, I have one of
those mugs which was sent to me by Downies who wanted
me to sell them on the site. This was part of my
reply to them: "I showed the coffee mug to a
number of Kelly affiliates and while they liked the
design they all voiced their dismay at the inaccurate
text on the mug. Actually most thought the description "child-like
and rather simple" which I have to agree with..."

One thing I do know is Penzig does his research and
although you my not like the fact he has an establishment
bias in his books, his dates and facts are spot on
. He did not write fiction like Cary, or Clune. I am
a believer in Ian Jones and I think he would back the
facts as said by Penzig. If people want the truth on
a subject you must take the good with the bad . Penzigs
books do have ISBN numbers as well as facts. I
don't think you should second guess Ian Jones when
it comes to Edgar Penzig. And as far as your interpretation
of the man himself, how can Edgar have an established
bias and the facts as well!?! Ross old boy you are

the gang of " bloodthirsty murderers". Before
listing the paper on Ebay I'm interested to know whether
any Museums or groups dedicated to the memory of Ned

Edgar Penzig

Do you know where I can get a copy of the book Bushrangers – Heroes
or Villains by Edgar Penzig? If not, do you know the
ISBN number from the book? I am looking for the book
for the information it contains on the Clarke Brothers. He'd
be lucky to have an ISBN number on that book. And even
if he does I couldn't give a damn as he's no Max Brown...
My Art

[twoomba5@bigpond.net.au] 03 Feb 07
Hi there. Late last year I contacted you about a series
of mixed media paintings I am doing on Kelly gang,
unfortunately my email might have bounced as I have
had no reply. When I look at your website I see other
artist's work, I have sold some of my Kelly 'Story'
to private collectors and on eBay, I would like the
opportunity to show my work to you. I was taught art
at R.M.I.T. I shall include some work here. Sorry
mate, I was busy getting married late last year but
I have put your images up in our Gallery section.
Cheers!
Family Tree

I was wandering if you could tell me where I could
find a decent family tree of the Kelly's. An up to
date one would be good, if possible. Somehow
I don't think Ned's living relatives would be happy
with me doing that...

To Alan Crichton, "Sorry about that" (the
price of the Besieged CD). There were I think four
versions made. One in Gaelic, one in English using
Aussie accents for Irish viewing, one for Australia
using fake Irish accents that they did not have and
one for the rest of the world. The were different versions,
depending on how much a particular market knew of the
story and what to include. I'd prefer the Gaelic version
any day to hearing early Aussies speaking with a foreign
accent. At least the Irish producers did their research
and got it right.
The
Last Outlaw booklet

When The Last Outlaw was
originally screened in 1980 a glossy magazine came
out a few weeks before the mini series was televised,
introducing the actors and the show alike. I know I've
waited a very long time for this and I'm probably not
going to get anywhere, but would anyone have a copy
of this magazine that they would be willing to part
with? Of course I'm willing to pay for it and the p&h.
You know what they say, if you don't ask...

Hello Alan, It sounds as if you have the "Barrie
Dowdall "version of "Ned Kelly ,The True
Story." I have to say I love it. I have a Video
in English. So there must be an English version available.
If you do not get satisfaction from the distributor,
it may even be worth contacting Barrie direct . telwell@iol.ie If
you had wanted "Besieged" then you could
try direct to the producer, Gregory Miller filmprojects@bigpond.com.
Hope this helps, Ellen.

Besieged - Bebuggered
From: Alan Crichton [rcr87285@bigpond.net.au]
19 Jan 07
Well Bradley, what can I say, I got done. I was appreciative
of Mick Fitzsimons for bringing to my attention the
distributors of the Kelly documentary in December's
feedback, but Mick, you didn't tell me I'd be shelling
out bloody $60 for the pleasure. Now I know how John
Tarleton felt at Jerilderie, but not to be deterred
by this outrageous price, I forked it out and waited
impatiently at the letter box for two days.At last
it arrived, and in the time it took McIntyre to knock
of Kennedy's horse, I had that silver sucker out of
its plain plastic two bob case and posted into my D.V.D
player.I hit the play on the remote and waited, and
waited, and waited, only to be greeted with a test pattern
followed by a high pitched screech that not only had
me frantically pushing every button to get it to stop, but
totally panic stricken. After finally hitting the right
button I thought there would be silence, but alas,it
was not to be, now every dog in the street was howling
like something out of a Sherlock Holmes movie. After
finding my little bitch cowering under the bed,I settled
her down, and finally sat back to watch this epic. Not
to be, the movie they had sent me was in BLOODY IRISH!
and not one other language to choose from, not even
English.I fudged my way through the Irish Kelly experts
and was actually starting to get into it,when who should
pop up but BLOODY HEATH LEDGER! and clips from that
crumby movie.By this time I was totally disheartened
and ready to call it quits until this gorgeous woman
by the name of Helen Hollow came on and made everything
worthwhile.Sorry, but apart from the 1906 clips and
the old photos, which I've seen many times before, oh
and Helen, I thought the Picture Pond documentary The
Story of Ned Kelly +extra features beat it by a Kelly
country mile, and only cost me near half the price.I
should have been more patient and waited for it to
be shown on T.V. Oh well SUCH IS LIFE. Alan,
it's Ellen Hollow. But if you're listening to an Irish
commentary then it could come across as Helen. I'd
stick with the Jones DVD instead...
Ned Kelly wanted poster
From: Sharon [sandsbuilding@westnet.com.au]
15 Jan 07
My husbands’ parents were given a framed Ned
Kelly wanted poster more than 20 years ago towards
a large debt owed to them for work done. It is in pretty
good condition and on close inspection it looks authentic,
thickish cream/off white paper, folds, tiny tear marks
etc. How do we find out if it is real and if it is
how do we sell it or find out how much it is worth?
Australian Son
From: Mick Fitzsimons [mickfitzsimons@hotmail.com]
07 Jan 07
G’day Brad, Have just finished reading the two
chapters of Australian Son by Max Brown that you have
posted. Very interesting and Max Brown certainly has
a flair for telling it how it was. I was particularly
interested in how he described Melbourne when James
and Mary Quinn arrived with their six children in 1841,
as my family arrived earlier that same year. I must
say that I was tickled pink to see that I have an ally
in Max Brown when it comes to Ned’s accent and
I quote from page 11, second paragraph. “Kate
and Jane (Quinn), meanwhile had married brothers Jack
and Tom Lloyd and so the clan soon included a brace
of tallish young Australians who spoke a tongue decidedly
different to the brogue of their parents.” Now,
if only we could get Ian Jones to admit he made a blue
about Ned having an Irish accent, the story on film
at least, would regain some of it’s Australianness,
something it has been denied since this misconception
first happened in the Mick Jagger film.
Books and Figures
From: Susanne Høimark
Rasmussen [Susanne.Hoimark@skolekom.dk] 02 Jan 07
About 20 years ago I had a paberback about the Kelly
Gang - penguin I think. It was rather ironic - a childrens
humoristic version. I think the author is Randolf Stow.
Do you know if it still exists and where? I now live
in Denmark and would like to have a copy. About a year
ago I got a small figure of Ned Kelly from my brother.
It´s about 25 cm high and is made of plate metal
and painted (souvenier like). Attached to the figure
was a note with pictures of figures of the rest of
the gang. I can´t find the note and would like
the rest of the figures. Can anyone help me?
Nolan Numbered Print

I recently inherited a signed and numbered Nolan print
from the Ned Kelly series, it features the policeman
and peacock and is numbered 24/60. I've had it re framed
and want to find out a value for insurance purposes.
Can you advise where/who could help me here? thankyou
and kind regards, Robin. You
didn't mention from which year but as a ball park,
the 1870s editions are fetching around $1500 to $2500
each |
