Anniversary of Aaron Sherritt's Death
From: Banjo [trigger_happy222@hotmail.com] 27 Jun 04
Yesterday was the 26th of June and the anniversary of the night Joe Byrne shot his best mate, Aaron Sherritt, who was suspected of being a police informer by the Gang. I couldn't help but notice there were no other notes in the feedback section about this important event so i thought i had better make my own in case you lot forgot. Though, alot of you probably didn't because you may chose to look upon Aaron as one of the 'bad guys' in the Kelly story. Well anyway, R.I.P Aaron Sherritt. Aaron is in our Kelly Country section NOT in our Real Villains section...

Ian Jones
From: Warren Trick [warrentrick@bigpond.com] 23 Jun 04

Once again Ian Jones cuts through all the crap foisted on the public in the form of a succession of dreadful Kelly films and the documentary screened a short time ago. So true, when he says I think you are missing some words here...

Hey hows it going? I was just wondering if you remeber the name off the cd that the lead singer from screaming jets made about the kelly gang? I heard the director Darryl J Melbourne just ran out of funds but it may still come about

Soap Box
From: Aidan Phelan [angelathornton@optusnet.com.au] 22 Jun 04
I would like to add something for a soapbox article. What's the deal with the Toyota ads using Ned Kelly to sell 4WDs? They also use Captain Cook, Adam & Eve, and Noah! This does not make ME want to by one of their cars and serves as a crude exploitation of historical figures rah rah rah!

From the UK
From: Rebecca Neffati [becca@neffati32.fsnet.co.uk] 21 Jun 04
I expect you get alot of emails and so I won't keep you long. I would just like to say a huge thank you for your amazing website. Its the best one I have come across online. I am currently writing a fictional book on the life of Ned and without your site I really don't think i would have been able to start. The problem with living over here in the UK is obviously there is a huge lack of interest in The Kelly Gang Legend and so when I decided to use the internet I found a lack of good sites too until I came across IronOutlaw.com. So thank you so much and keep up the good work. I never get tired of praise!

Happy birthday, Ned
From: Marian [sthsherbrookehs@yahoo.com.au] 16 Jun 04

Once again, as Victoria is plunged into winter weather, the good folk of Glenrowan (population 2 shopkeepers and a dog) are preparing to host the annual Siege Dinner. This is rapidly becoming THE Kelly event of the year. Meanwhile, here in Melbourne (population considerably more) the eleventh of November is likely to pass yet again with nothing much in the way of acknowledgement of such an important day. Add to that the fact that, sometime towards the end of this year or the beginning of next year, we will reach Ned's 150th birthday, and we begin to sound like an apathetic lot. How hard would it be to hire a gaol for the evening, bring in some food, get a bunch of Kelly speakers to front a question and answer session (so they don't have to prepare anything special) and take bookings? Even if I don't know when Ned was born, I'd like the opportunity to raise a glass in the presence of like-minded people and wish him the best. I have to say I'm no good at organising but if anyone out there would like to organise or attend such an event, they are welcome to contact me. Let's see what we can achieve. (And if you DO have something planned already, sorry to have trodden on your toes and why haven't you invited me yet?) Ironoutlaw.com will be making a major announcement nearer to the end of this year...

Ned
From: Ira Herbold [Ira_Herbold@hotmail.com] 13 Jun 04
Yes, Ned was an outlaw. He was a murderer a cattle and horse stealer. He was in trouble with the law from a very young age. But if he was so bad, then why, when he was sentenced to death in 1880, did 32, 000 people sign a petition to save his life? Yes Ned did a lot of bad things, but all for the sake of his family. When Constable Fitzpatrick went to arrest Dan Kelly in 1878, he molested Kate Kelly. What did the police expect but Ned to take up arms? I mean really. Yes Ned was a 'bad man' but he only did these things for his mother and his sisters. I belive that there's a bit of Ned in all of us.

From: Nafis A. [funka_desi@hotmail.com] 31 May 04

Hi, my name is Nafisa and I am a year 12 student. I am studying the history extension course, and I have chosen to do my major work on the topic of Ned Kelly. Hero or villain. I think your site is fantastic I have been looking at it all afternoon, however I am struggling to locate much evidence that ned was just a straight out criminal. I have got some information on Edgar Penzig, but I was wondering if there was any further information or historians names you could send me. Thank you very much. Penzig an historian? I don’t think so! Look no further than our Real Villains section

My thoughts on the Boys
From: Fuzer [dfuzer01@hotmail.com] 31 May 04

If i had a choice of living my normal life or being an outlaw i would have to say an outlaw.. these boys have inspired me so much that id rather die at an early age for doing what i believe in.. not just ned, the whole 4 of them inspire me and i think the others deserve just as much recognition as ned.. i have a tattoo of ned in battle but its just not ned to me its represents the whole gang and i think when ppl look this page up they should look up the others as well cos ned didnt do it by himself it took a team effort to get as far as they got.

Ned Kelly himself
From: Amy Law [myboyfriendthinksimhot@hotmail.com] 23 May 03

I think that ned kelly is an outright legend no- one better i think he is a true hero who always remained true to himself from his first sentence to beechworth for assaulting a officer to his very last stand at Glenrowan a brave man a larrikan and a gentleman to boot i can not fault the man but ill tell you here and now that if i was put in that position i would probably do the same sleazy Fitzpatrik hitting on my sister i wouldnt take to kindly yes he did kill some people but it was all in the sake of the love of his family and protection and if the police of his time wernt so stubborn and pig headed then the war of the kelly gang would never have happend and the true hero of ned kelly could of lived his life longer then 21 years and i always remember that in theis world. Interesting email address...

Can you let me know how I can get a copy of the three progress reports from the Royal Commission of 1881 into the outbreak of the Kelly Gang. This is a wonderful website, which has taken alot of time and research. Its a credit to you. Keep up the good work. These originals are scarce as hen’s teeth and worth a mint. There’s no actual shop front selling these items, you’ll just have to keep your eyes and ears open

I was considering buying Robert Drewe's book on Ned Kelly, until I realised it was fiction. This book is the only one which sells well in my country. Can you please tell me which book, in your view is the most factual and impartial? I don't want to buy a biased book which just tries to discredit Kelly if you see what I mean. I'm not sure if you reply personally to emails or not but I'd really appreciate a reply if you have the time. Check out our Book section. My advice is to go for anything with a rating of 4 Neddies or above

Ned Kellys Life
From: David R Preece [DPREECE1@bigpond.com] 09 Apr 04
I am doing a project on Ned Kelly, I find it very interesting, I believe that he is a hero not a villain. There was a question that I need to ask... “What role does Thomas McIntire play in Ned's life?” Its one major question in my project. Can you please mail me some information on that question. Thank you lots. McIntyre played a large role in Ned’s death with his perjured testimony at Kelly’s murder trial. Check out our History section for more information

The Bucket...
From: Brian O'Sullivan [brianjosullivanuk@hotmail.com] 05 May 04

Hi there, I am a theatrical student in Glasgow, Scotland, and someone made a reference to a bucket on the head being connected with Ned Kelly. I was wondering if you could tell me, basically, what was the purpose of this bucket's on Kelly's head, and why did he begin to wear it? Your site is massively extensive, and I'm sure this information is in there, but it would make my life much easier if someone with proper and thorough Ned knowledge could answer this simply for me. Hope this is not too presumptuous, and that you can help. Being a theatrical student I can forgive your stupid question, although I doubt many of my readers will. They'll just think you are a moron!

From: Neil Collins [neilandpaula@cnn.net.au] 10 Apr 04

Neil and KidsI have been looking at your site for the last couple of days and think it is really cool to put him on a web page as I think that he really deserves it. I have been a long time fan of Ned as I have got Tattoo's of him, and I think that his name and his story has to live on as a part of our heritage for the next generation of kids that come along, I know that my kids like Ned as he was and not who he has been portrayed to by what the community thinks he is as I have seen on telly, so please keep up the good work on this great australian idol of ours. Kind regards. I just sent you a letter to say what a great fan of Ned I am, so as you can see the tatt I have, I know that it is not real clear but you can still see it up close in the photo.

If you don't, does Channel 7 inform you before they run it on TV, because I don't care if I have to video it. Thanks very much for your help. Blood In The Dust Book Review
From: Juli Lincoln [paulsplace@labyrinth.net.au] 23 Mar 04
Blood In The DustWell I finished the book last night after reading it since I picked it up from you yesterday. You asked me for comments so I will make a few. The first half of the book (the history) written by or in association with David White, is very easy to read and constantly relates back to evidence. Which I feel is important to believing what is written. The second half analysis done by Angeline Baron, left me wanting to ask questions. Is the analysis too reliant on the available history of Ned and Joe? The analysis nicely corresponds with what is happening in the lives of these men at the time of writting the letters. What if the subject is unknown to the Graphologist? We are told in the forward that only the age, sex and occupation is required to analysis handwriting. If Angeline did not have the extensive research available on the story of the Kelly Gang, would the analysis read the same? Maybe it is just my lack of knowledge about Graphology that makes me question this however I was impressed by her understanding of the character behind both Ned and Joe.

The complete letters at the end of the book, were very interesting and I feel gave a different look at the Ned that what has been portrayed in history. Overall the book is hard to put down and a thoughly interesting study into the lives of Ned Kelly and Joe Byrne. I think you will receive a bit of flak over the book but once read and digested the information makes both men become more 3D than the 2D image that many have been presented over the years. I think the book is sypathetic to the Kelly side of the story but it also appears to be book based on evidence produced through court proceedings, letters and police files. Thank you for the opportunity for me to purchase such an interesting book and I wish all of the team involved in the book the best of luck. Kindest regards. I think many people would be surprised if Angeline analysed their hand writing...

Ned’s Reprieve Petition
From: Srg [rages65@hotmail.com] 28 Mar 04

My mum who is 70 told me recently that her grandmother was in melbourne when a petition was passed around town regarding the acquital of the man himself. She went back home to mildura apparently, and after many berations from friends and acquaintances, claimed that she didn't sign it for fear of the police going after her and her family. The poor ol' duck regretted it but always had a fond word for him. On ya GG! Two more things...Is Peter Carey's book worth grabbing, and also , i know people are hanging it on heath for the movie portrayal, but i say good on ya for not doing a friggin roman general or a randy scot with a penchant for makeup in a story which is 50 - 75% wrong!

Hi Brad I was in a book shop the other day - and came across the Ned Kelly Encyclopaedia - which seemed quite broad and very interesting (going to buy it soon) and an updated version of A Short Life - have you had a chance to look at them yet? Also for anyone intersted (or wondering what had happened)my film on Ned's last days in jail is still going ahead - it will be next year rather than this year - as I need to organise more money and support for the film - I'll post more on mango-a-gogo.com soon. Happy birthday for the site too - keep up the great work! Still waiting on Lothian to send me a copy...

Your Wonderful Website
From: Lisa [email address withheld] 19 Mar 04
I was looking at your wonderful website like I often do,and when looking at the theatre page, thought you would want to hear about a great play I saw about the Kelly Gang a few years ago. The play was called 'Kelly's Reign', and I saw it twice in Sydney in 1995 and again in Melbourne a while later. It was very well done and very accurate. An interesting thing about the play, is that in the Sydney shows Steve Hart was played by Irish actor Colin Farrell. He was about 19 at the time and living in Sydney, this was his first ever acting job.I didn't realise it was him until a while ago when there was an article in the paper about him living here and they mentioned the play. Even a while before reading it, I was looking at my Kelly Gang articles, among them being the article from the time with a photograph and the play program with his name in it, even then it didn't register with me that it was THE Colin Farrell! I am not just saying this because he is now one of the biggest actors in the world, but he was brilliant as Steve, and looked very good as him, handsome, with his dark hair parted in the middle, and he had a little moustache. When we were at the play, I thought it would be great if possible, to have the four actors who played the Kelly Gang sign the play program. Afterwards when all the people came out, I said to my Mum, -Look, there are the actors who played Dan & Steve- I was standing right next to Colin Farrell and he smiled as if he knew I was going to ask him to autograph it. But, like an idiot, I hesitated and chickened out. Of course now I really regret it. After we had left I finally got the courage to ask them, but by that time almost all the people had left. The only actor that was there was the actor who played Ned,who was lovely and autographed it for me.But it is good to know Colin Farrell got his interest in acting after playing Steve! I have the original article from the time about the play with a photograph of Colin Farrell standing with the other three actors who played the boys, and the play program with his name and everything in it.I would have sent it,but I am not very good with the computer. If you have any interest in wanting it though,I am happy to post copies to IronOutlaw. Sorry this letter is so long. Your website is fantastic. Thanks.

Happy Birthday to Ironoutlaw!
From: Sharon Hollingsworth [sharonandchuck@webtv.net] 15 Mar 04

Brad, I just wanted to wish Ironoutlaw a happy birthday! I noticed on the homepage that it was created March 14, 1995. After I helped get Glenrowan1880.com ready to launch, I saw all the hard work and dedication it takes to get a site to the point where it is webworthy! And Ironoutlaw is very worthy, indeed! I look very much forward to the new changes you are in the process of making for the site and hope for many more birthdays to come for it! Yes the new manuscript from the late, great Max Brown will bump up the gloss factor by another 100%

Tom Baxter and Ned's Skull
From: R.M.O'Donnell [rmod@telstra.com] 13 Mar 04

I have noticed that your site does not seem to hold Tom Baxter's sincerity in great regard. He certainly does believe he has the right skull with good reason. I have no doubt of his sincerity because I have kown him for most of my life but he has good reason to doubt the sincerity of many he has dealt with and given information to. There does seem to be an extreme reaction agaist him generally giving him good reason not to let the skull out of his hands. Sorry mate, this website is www.ironoutlaw.com not www.ravinglunatic.com

Steve Hart's girlfriend
From: Cal [cal02@mckinnonsc.vic.edu.au] 09 Mar 04
G'day, how ye going? Thanks to the information I recieved from Paul O'Keefe (thanks Paul!) on Steve Hart's girlfriend. I went and did a fair bit of research and am very happy to report that I soon found a pic of Steve's sweetheart, whose name is Lily Arabella Cherry, as well as some history on the product “Buffalo Brewery Beer” (which her face appears upon). Well here is the info and the pic of Lily (isn't she pretty?):

Buffalo BreweryBuffalo Brewery Beer
The Buffalo Brewery, Boorhaman, is reputedly the smallest commercial brewery in Australia, if not in the world, with a brew length of only about 80 litres. The brewery commenced operation in 1996 at the Boorhaman Hotel, which is situated 12km north of Wangaratta in north-eastern Victoria. The brewery took its name from the former Buffalo Brewery in Wangaratta, which operated during the first half of the twentieth century. The Boorhaman Hotel and Buffalo Brewery were taken over in September 1999 by Steve Hill and Greg and Leanne Fanning who presently operate the business. Buffalo beers are produced from malt (no concentrate) and sugar, using water drawn from a spring at the brewery. They are available at the hotel on tap and in 330mL bottles.

P.S. If anyone, ANYONE else has ANY information on Lily, or any other of Steve Hart's girl friend's or any information on Dan Kelly's girl friends, plz, plz, ppppppllllllzzzzzz let me know! Thanks heaps! Yes a number of people, including Ben and myself, attempted to drink the Buffalo Brewery dry at the last Glenrowan Siege Dinner!

In response to your responses
From: Aidan Phelan [angelathornton@optusnet.com.au] 08 Mar 04
In regards to the people that have shown interest in my interpretation of the Fitzpatrick scene, I thank you for showing enthusiasm at this particular aspect. This was a very complicated part of the story to write about as every story told by witnesses is conflicting in some aspect. To be truthful, the only part of the scene that we are certain what happens to any degree is when Fitzpatrick arrives to arrest Dan. In showing the action in the hut up to when the scuffle breaks out we leave the rest to imagination as that is how history has left the actual event. Ned, I believe, was there when the shot was fired, and I believe it is possible that he fired the shot. why he would deny having even been there in his letters would be to (hopefully) discredit Fitzpatrick's story and force a reprieve for his mother, Williamson and Skillion. His motives however are difficult to determine in the fight due to the frantic nature of the scuffle. Thus I have attempted to portray the scene as I see it in the telling from the witnesses.

Re: Ned Kelly Script 07 Feb 04
From: Trevor Cheeseman [iceman@dragnet.com.au] 22 Feb 04
Just reading your script proposal for the Fitzpatric Hut Scene. Only my opinion of course but to get some sense of realism onto celluloid you obviously have to have actors show emotion. What emotion you have Ned show will be crucial as he is the lead character. No doubt Ned was angry, he has just seen his mum whack a copper with a fire shovel. But is he cold and calculatingly angry. Or maybe he is blustery and uncontrollably angry. Or maybe, considering that he didn't drag Fitzpatric outside and flog him merely briefly angry which quickly passed. That is how I would see it. Ian has more or less confirmed that Ned was in the hut and did fire the shot. The eternal question is why did he fire the shot? Maybe he didn't know why he did either and was asking himself that very question in the Jerilderie letter. But I think that if your scene is to be realistic then this maybe something to think about. Hope it helps. The plot thickens, hopefully...

Re: Ned Kelly Script 07 Feb 04
From: Mick Fitzsimons [mickfitzsimons@hotmail.com] 20 Feb 04
In doing this script Aidan, you have the conflicting stories as to whether Ned was actually there or not. Personally I find it hard to believe that Ned could fire a gun from about a metre and miss by so much that the bullet would hit Fitzpatrick in the wrist which was above his head. Ned was also handy with his fists so would have no need of a gun in such a small and confined space, especially when a bullet could have disastrous consequences with family members present. Ned also states he wasn?t there. Ned admitted to many things, so why would he lie about this? In saying that Ned was present, it makes him look like a liar, a coward and an extremely poor shot with a revolver, hardly the type of man that would go on to enshrine his name in Oz folk law. Food for thought Aidan...

What has happened, all you true Kelly followers, not one remark re the papers that were read in Canberra, Ian Jones, Damien Keneally, presenting interesting worthwhile words on our favourite topic On the same weekend as the Commemoration of the Jerilderie bank hoist. Not even feedback after Ian's great talk in Jerilderie on Friday 6th February, can't believe it not a comment from all the interested public. No comment

Dan and Steve's unknown sweethearts
From: Banjo [trigger_happy222@hotmail.com] 19 Feb 04

Hi. Would anyone be able to help me? Cause i have read nearly every non-fiction Kelly book and searched all over every Kelly website but still cannot find whether Steve or Dan had any sweethearts in their ENTIRE lives, apart from Jane Jones, who Steve apparently took a fair bit of interest in, at the Glenrowan Inn, before the seige broke out. If you could help me in any way it would be really appreciated. Thanks a million.

Ned Kelly Script
From: Aidan Phelan [angelathornton@optusnet.com.au] 07 Feb 04

G'day, me again asking for people's views on my ideas for a Ned Kelly script. This time it's the Fitzpatrick case. In my script, I lean more on portraying an amalgm of the different accounts of what happened. Fitzpatrick decides to attempt to arrest Dan and possibly Ned on horse stealing charges to redeem his career. He has a few drinks to steady his nerves and sets off. He reaches the Kelly house and is told Dan will be back later, so Fitzpatrick rides back into town for another couple of drinks before returning. When he returns he meets Joe Byrne who tells Fitzpatrick that Dan is inside and they had just come back from riding (we assume Ned is nearby). Fitzpatrick knocks on the door which is answered by Dan who is holding cutlery. Dan agrees to go with the trooper because he believs there is no evidence against him, but wants to finish dinner first. Fitzpatrick allows it. Ellen is terribly annoyed at Fitzpatrick and becomes somewhat hostile towards him. Fitzpatrick grows impatient and complains. As a result Ellen questions him asking for a warrant. Fitzpatrick pulls out the police gazette and points to the article with his gun naming the charges and saying "There's your warrant". Fitzpatrick then makes a sloppy attempt to talk to Kate. She tries to brush him off but he persists. Ellen becomes defensve and smacks Fitzpatrick with the coal shovel. Dan claps a Heenan's hug on Fitzpatrick and tries to disarm the trooper who had turned around threatiningly towards Ellen. At that moment Ned rushes in as Brickey Williamson takes the younger children outside, then from inside the house we hear (but don't see) Ned shouting "Out of this you bastard" and a gunshot. Thus portraying the event with as much mystery using the facts as the actual event. What do you think? I'd love to see what people think of this one, which I'm rather keen on. I apologise for the lengthiness.

Hi, I purchased a limited addition painting years ago of Ned Kelly. It was painted by Peter Barlow. It is the best one Ive seen. The only problem is i dont agree with the dates. He has put 1856-1880 & i belive it should be 1854-1880. I desperatly need to contact this artist & any info at all would be very greatly appreciated. Thankyou so much for your time. 1856?

Did a relative of Ned Kelly come to Kellys Bay in the Kiapara Harbour in NZ?
From: Max Street [archery@xtra.co.nz] 26 Jan 04
There is a constant but unsubstantiated belief that Kelly’s Bay here in New Zealand is named after one of Ned Kelly’s brothers who was brought to New Zealand by a boat with his aboriginal wife, and lived here. The story goes that he was put on a boat inAustralia, with the instruction not to bring him back and he was put ashore in theKaiparaHarbourin the early days and lived here. The bay is named after him. Do you have any records of this or can advise of any one who can assist us? We are exploring and recording our early history and would appreciate your advice. We have an early settlement site but have no records of who was there. Thank you.

Last Outlaw Petition
From: B [Medusacameo@aol.com] 21 Jan 04

How to I get my name on the Last Outlaw Channel 7 petition? Is it too late? Was it successful? I watched The Last Outlaw as a kid too. Was already a Kelly fan, but this made me fall in love with him.  Still not over it. Heath Ledger's movie sucked. Channel 7 simply ignored the petition I sent them...

Thanks re: Ned’s lovers
From: Aidan Phelan [angelathornton@optusnet.com.au] 20 Jan 04

I would like to thank those who have responded to my previous post, I have recieved great support since my last posting. As I develop the script I will be posting the updates here to see what people think. Ned is a man of the people, and his story should be told by the people, and every little comment helps. Thankyou.

Left or right handed?
From: James G Stewart JP [jamesgs@nex.net.au] 14 Jan 04

GOOD AFTERNOON i have read a lot on KELLY and some pictures show him as LEFT HANDED and others he as RIGHT HANDED. There is a large statue of KELLY at GLENWROAN MUSEUM and this shows him firing a RIFLE from his LEFT HAND and hence i am not sure if he was LEFT HANDED OR RIGHTHANDED. Would you be kind enough to advise me on this. In a scrap he could use both of them quite effectively

Ned’s Lovers
From: Nicky Cowie [gypsywolfgirl@yahoo.com.au] 07 Jan 04

I just read Aidan's email (29/12/03) about his plans for writing Ettie Hart in as a love interest for Ned in his script. I think his plans sound rather compelling and close enough to true life to be believable and worth writing! I have a couple of thoughts to offer for his consideration: the only thing that might not be persuasive is the idea that any woman would not be instantly attracted to Ned :) He was a big spunk afterall, lol. An alternate suggestion might be that, considering Ned was a fiery man with strong opinions - instead, Aiden could always use the classic drama ploy of 'conflict' to initiate their attraction/relationship. Also, from the evidence we have available, it seems that Ettie's affection for Ned did not 'cool' as such. It appears that she was devoted to him and trying to help him (i.e. her being in Melbourne) right up to his death. But then, the great part about fiction is that the writer gets to add his or her own interpretations. I wish Aidan the best of luck with his efforts!

Ned Kelly Armour
From: Todd Peisley [toddp@honda.com.au] 02 Jan 04

Yes before you ask, I am a descendant of the Bushranger “Invisible Prince” John Peisley. I am about to undertake a road trip throughout Southern NSW and Victoria and looking to find out where the pieces of armour and other artefacts are currently displayed and couldn't find it on your site or linked sites. In you valuable opinion is Glenrowan worth a visit or are the relic's and other interesting information scattered to the four winds? If you do a detour to Canberra you'll see Joe's armour at the National Museum as part of their “Outlaw” exhibition. Head down to Melbourne to see the rest of the Gang's Armour at the Old Melbourne Gaol, Police Museum and State Library. Glenrowan is worth the visit if you want to buy tea towels and snow domes. You'll have a more historically correct time at Beechworth and Jerilderie...

TEACHING HISTORY
While not everyone wants to read about Ned Kelly or the ANZACs or even The Great Depression, we hope they want to learn something about Australian History. From the ex-Prime Minister John Howard to a confused ex-NSW Education Minister Carmel Tebbutt (see the 'ex' pattern here?) a number of politicians have jumped on the teaching history bandwagon. But at what cost? From right wingers to a multitude of meddling State Governments, it seems everyone has an agenda. We'd like to let the readers decide what is worth learning. Here at IronOutlaw.com we present the facts, the fiction and everything in between. It all adds to the experience and hopefully makes history an exciting place to be while also proving it doesn't always have to be written by the victors.
